There are numerous reasons why physical appearance shouldn't have as much influence as it does in
our society.
1) People have put too much emphasis on physical appearance, fueled by many factors: The fashion &
entertainment industry, magazines, the glorification of "celebrities", etc.
2) Trying to live up to an arbitrary standard is a losing battle....why do people let others tell
them what they should look like? Especially senseless when the definition of beauty changes
frequently.
3) If you spend all of your time & $ trying to live up to a physical ideal, how will you find out
what really matters in life (it's not physical appearance!)
4) Your sense of who you are is worth much more than your sense of how you look.
I will say that when I was younger, I bought into the physical appearance thing.Lots of time spent
wishing I was taller, etc. No time spent wondering what contribution I could make to the world (no
time for that: Too busy thinking about my physical shortcomings to think about anything else).
It's much easier to buy into someone else's opinion of what's "acceptable" than your own opinion. A
lot less soul searching to be done: You're either born with long legs or you aren't. No work needed
on your part. If you have to think about what your contribution to the world will be, that's
tougher.
Let me also say that I spent a long period of time with someone who told me how fat I was (I look
at pictures of me back then & I was bordering on anorexic!). I bought into it, kept trying to
improve my appearance. No matter what I did, it wasn't enough. I spent more time trying to please
another person than enjoying how I really was (which was pretty darn good).
Life is too short!
Is my face RED..
....shoot, now I've skewed the results by putting this on the wrong side....how embarrassing...
It's the long term effects of me trying to make myself more attractive! |
