I happen to be an animal rights moron....I think PETA is a terrorist organization. The things they
do are worse than even mentioned in the post of this debate. Many of the animals they "rescue" are
killed. They simply do not have room for them. They bomb labs with no regard for human beings.
They cause people to feel guilty over eating meat, although there is no way to stop the meat
industry despite a few people who are "converted" by PETA. By my statement that I am an animal
rights moron, I mean that I actually do care about animals and how they are treated. I eat meat,
but I do not believe factory farming is ethical. I cannot stop it on my own. I do try to buy free
range when I can. I do my part for animals by rescue work. I have my own pets, but I often have
rescue animals in my home. I pick them up when I see them wandering on a road where they are likely
to be hit. I worked for a vet, so I do calculate my risk first and I do not expose them to my
children or my own pets until I have them checked, vaccinated and am sure they are able to get
along. I make sure they go to good homes. I do not sell them, nor do I place an ad in the local
paper. I screen potential owners through a rescue site. I check vet records, insist on
spay/neuter, follow up to see that it is a good fit and do not adopt to people who are not going to
keep the animal indoors to be a part of the family. I also believe that animals do have feelings
and should be kept as humanely as possible, but if there is a choice between a human life being
saved through animal testing, or an animal life being lost because of it, I am for saving the human.
I think that you have to realize that not all people who believe that animals have rights are
morons. Some of us are not extremists. Some people want animals to be treated with dignity and
respect where possible, but not at the expense of human lives. PETA is not a good example of an
animal rights organization. No extremist ever sets a good example for their cause. It is the
moderates that can do the good for their cause because we can be fair and objective. I don't spray
paint people's fur coats. I don't set lab animals free and I don't post videos exposing the meat
industry at it's worst in an effort to brainwash people. I do tell my children and anyone else who
will listen to go to circuses that do not use animals (such as Cirque). I won't watch an elephant
(a magnificent and intelligent creature) that was treated harshly in order to train it stand on one
foot. I don't believe that when one breaks loose and goes "nuts", killing the trainer who beat,
prodded and resorted to other methods to "break" it, it should be destroyed. Sigfried and Roy
worked with their tigers for years without incident. The night the tiger mauled the one of them
(forgive me, I do not remember which one and don't have time to google), it was a tragedy. It was
also preventable. Another thing to remember is that they knew they were working with animals that
had the capacity to hurt, wound or kill them. They assumed the risk. They did not make a decision
to destroy the tiger. That was a responsible and loving decision and one that I can respect and
stand behind. I can look to those performers and know that they see past the bottom line with the
animals. They do not look only for money. They love the animals and assume the risk willingly.
Other than when animals are used for entertainment or for luxury items such as fur, I have no
objection to them being used for the good of humanity. I do believe they should be treated with
dignity and respect and that there should be guidelines for all facilities using animals for testing
and inspections that should be carried through regularly, but with no back peddling where human
medicine research and development is involved. So, again, I ask that you please do not lump animal
rights people into one group and call us all morons. I am far from a moron. I love all life. I do
not harm anything or anyone. I simply ask that people try to respect and be a bit thankful to the
animals who do give their lives for the advancement of medicine and other areas that their
contribution is a necessity. |
