People Should Not Only Read The Bible But Also Read The History On The Bible As Well As The History On The People Of The Bible And Who Wrote The Bible... ETC...
Basically to have a correct understanding of the bible, one must also know history of the bible, the world conflicts that were happening when the bible was still in works, the clashes between cultures, the history of people in power, etc... Give your opinion and why you feel that way... Also, try to include things from the bible and explain why or why not one should understand history of the bible with that quote.

A lot of the metaphors make a lot more sense when you know their culture.

If you only read the bible your only getting one side of the story. History in the bible that is recorded is also recorded in other books written from different points of view. If more fully understood it, then history might not repeat it's self so much.

Amen! Isn't it ironic that people who may quote a document word for word with great conviction and try to force their view on others are at the same time utterly resistant to learning any more about the document they keep quoting. What about different language translations of it? (it's been claimed for years parts of the English translation were not translated right). What about the choice of which books were kept in the Bible and which were tossed aside during bureaucratic decisions in the old church? And what about all the other various points you raised when you launched this debate? How can someone keep thumping and quoting a document they actually know so little about?

I agree, to understand the bible fully one must go back to the early age of the Egyptians. Start with Ram II, then work your way through history.

Well, here's my comment:

To truly understand the bible, you must truly understand the bible.

If more people understood more about the Bible, where it came from and what it means, there would be less people who took the Bible seriously.

Christianity only flourishes because people are ignorant.

Uh, knowing that is precisely why I take it seriously.
Atheism only flourishes because people are ign'rnt.

How much time do you think people have? Do you think people should not only read The Origin of the Species but also biographies of Darwin and commentaries on it? It is adequate for the average person to have a passing knowledge of Christianity, with perhaps more in depth knowledge on it's ideas. We cannot, and should not expect people to be experts on everything.

Should people read something and then do a back up check…Um if they are going to say that they are experts and are going to try to influence other people with their so called experience with that certain subject, then YES. It is only fair to ones opposition or comrades that one be fully informed on everything.

There are far more profitable ways people could spend their time than by reading an ancient text of superstition. It would be far more beneficial for them to read a book based on fact, rather than fancy, a science text book perhaps.

If they insist on reading the bible, however, certainly some of their illusions might be pierced by knowing a little more of its history and the process by which it was cobbled together; by recognising that the canonical Gospels were not and could not possibly have been written by the so-called disciples of Jesus; and that there were many other gospels presenting a different view of the supposed messiah which the victors in the power struggle that characterised early christianity eventually succeeded in excluding from public consciousness.

So, what is your point through all of what you typed? I am confused because A) the first paragraph isn’t needed since it doesn’t weigh much in this debate. B) Last it is sounding like you agree with me that people need to read and try to comprehend more than just the bible.
