I agree there is a difference between criticism and bashing. Most people just bash thinking its
criticism.
As for people being worried about the US, its the whole notion that one mistake could set off
nuclear war and the concept of MAD |

I am afraid that is the price that comes with being the only superpower in the world. As China gets
more powerful they will also start to come under as much scrutiny. This is how it should be. It as
our duty to keep a close eye on what the powers that be get up to. For me as an Englishman that
means the British Government because they affect me most but also the US because what happens over
there has a big impact on what happens in the rest of the world.
After saying all that I do agree to a point, especially when so many liberal types get all up in
arms if anyone should mutter a negative comment about Muslims, Nigerians, Mexicans, Eskimos et al
yet feel fine about casting sweeping dispersions on the whole of the USA. I can because I have a
dig at everyone. |

I see your point. Yet 1) US bashing is as popular among Americans as it is foreigners, maybe more
so. 2) As you already grasped - being the center of attention is it's own form of flattery. And 3)
Most importantly, any society that enshrines and protects freedom of expression has to be willing to
endure the expressions people hurl. If what they hurl is unfair then it's up to others to use their
own expression to counter it (which essentially is what you did with your debate topic post - so
well done). |
