Pennies Should Be Gone.
These days nobody uses pennies anymore. Do you agree that it should be destroyed.

A penny is actually worth more if you melt it down and sell the raw metal. Its costing the government money to keep making them.

I'm all for getting rid of the penny. It's just not worth it anymore. When I was stationed in Germany the PX system did not use the penny, your total purchase was rounded off to the nearest 5. For example if you purchased three item that cost nine cents, that would total 27 cents but we were charged only 25 cents. Even if they ROUNDED UP the total purchase to the near 5, I don't think four cents is going to kill our personal budgets. Yeah, get rid of the penny and the paper dollar.

Definitely good idea. Pennies, c'mon, they're not really worth anything.
An even better idea: Make everything that is in dollars in cents. For Example: Something that is currently 10 dollars should become 10 cents. We will have to get rid of pennies sometime, because when a pack of gum becomes $200, the penny will be worth 20x less than it is now.

They should get rid of the Penny & the nickel !! It would be much easier to round to 10 cents. Things would be in Dollars and tenths!!! Just get rid of that extra decimal place!!!

A penny costs the US Mint 1.7 ¢ ...
It is not a very wise business decision to keep on paying 1.7¢ for 1.0¢ value...
US will be the last country to adapt. They still have paper one-dollar bills !

We have already gotten rid of our 1 cent coin in Australia (in the 60s) and it works out great.

And why not, not a bad idea and in fact not an original one either..

In the UK we did have 1/2 pennies and they are now obsolete..

Before that there were 'farthings' and they went many years ago..

Why not drop the pointless penny and 2 penny .. I hate carrying change in my pocket and would gladly sacrifice a few pennies over the year to be rid of them..

I found this stupid at first, until I read what was actually in here. It's true the penny does cost more to make than it is actually worth, but if we were to get rid of the penny how would we give correct change? I thought of first getting rid of cents completely, only have dollars, and coins. That seems stupid I know was to round to the nearest multiple of 5, rounded up or down it really makes no difference because your only losing about 1, 2, 3 or 4 cents.

The penny is worth less than its own weight in copper and zinc, at a time when our government is running record deficits it seems stupid to pay more for something that most people leave in a little tray at the checkout counter. It cost 1.4 cents for every penny in 2006 and we made over 8.2 billion of them, seems like a huge waste of tax payer dollars to me.

They should be banned because they cost more than they are worth.
Also lucky pennies aren't lucky when they are all over the ground

It is time to get rid of pennies. Their production cost is higher than the coin's face value and most people do not use them anymore. The problem that mints are faced with is that they must create more and more pennies each year because people horde them, or throw them out altogether. Many stores and restaurants already practice rounding, in order to avoid the use of pennies. In Canada, most stores have a small tray next to the cash register with the slogan "take a penny, leave a penny" printed onto it. This way people can drop off their unwanted loose change and stores often use these coins when they engage in rounding that favors the client.

Australia has already gotten rid of its one cent coins and the Canadian parliament is currently considering a bill that will abolish the penny as well. The US, Britain and the euro zone should also follow this example.

I'm actually against it, but uhm, the whole thing with the penny tray is pretty smart and helpful when rounding off change.

Pennies are used alot after tax is added....But still, pennies shouldn't be destroyed since they have lots of history behind them and are good for collection.

NO! A (Canadian) penny is a sign of Canada. We should always keep it. It is like a peice of a whole we need to keep the penny!

If you take pennies out of currency then what would happen if flies are taken out of the ecosystem? That is the Question!

As Lawcom points out, we used to have half-pennies etc, so I guess the penny will disappear.

Yes, I find having a lot of one and two pennies in my purse annoying, but it's preferable to having an interest rate with a minimum five pence change...

No way! Pennies add up just like every other coin. Just because they are not used as much, doesn't mean that they don't spend the same. If you choose not to spend them, throw them in an empty jar and save them until the jar is full. Then you can go to the bank or Coinstar and eliminate all your pennies for cash.

We all use pennies, and besides if we got rid of the pennies, taxes would have to round to the nearest multiple of five, and I guarantee you they'd go up, not down, and who would want that?

I actually like pennies, they may take up a load of room in your wallet/purse/pockets but I find them to be quite...quaint :)
