I only agree a little bit because innocent people do get killed but in NM like 5 people just escaped
from prison, so depending on how bad the murder, and the suspect are they should be sentenced
accordingly |

I agree in principle, but our legal system is very flawed, and innocents get incarcerated.
For an incredibly interesting case of an obviously innocent man, google Bruce Lisker. He has been in
jail for the last 24 years since the age of 16 for a murder even the federal government doesn't
think he committed.
But California still hasn't granted him a new trial, even with all of the obvious mistakes and
corruption involved. To do so would be to acknowledge the flaws in their system, and we can't have
that. |

There are about a dozen other threads on this same topic by the way. In fact I'm partly recycling
an old answer from me.
I'll confess I've changed sides on this issue several times in my life, so let me say this
carefully.
I believe most people waiting on death row do NOT deserve the death penalty. I believe the constant
appeals process costs society more in the long run. I believe the wrong people have been put to
death. I believe it does NOT deter most criminals. I believe some of the means used to carry out
execution are inhumane.
BUT, in concept, I also believe there are some people so dangerous, so wicked, so irredeamable, the
smartest thing society could do is kill them. And I'm not talking about some guy who makes a mistake
with a gun one day. I'm talking horrific cases of rape, mutilation, mass murder, etc. If the "Devil"
himself were caught, said he'd do it again and never ever stop, would you say send him back to Hell
or would you just add him to the general prison population?
If the police catch a guy and he insists, "Yes, I raped all the little girls at the slumber party,
slashed their throats, and ate their hearts, I confess, I knew exactly what I was doing, and I'll do
it again and again every chance I get" then how can you not see executing that man. Granted there
may never ever be someone that bad who confesses who actually warrants the death penalty. We may go
decades without anyone actually needing to be put to death. But the concept that no one ever can or
should or deserves to be put to death I can't accept. And protecting society from a repeat offense
does NOT make us just as bad as the person repeatedly committing horrific crimes. |

If you kill murderers, you are no better than them, murderers should just be locked up permanently. |
