PAKI, Calling Someone A Paki Or Raghead Is Racist.
I think calling someone a Paki or Raghead is racist!

Yes. Calling an individual from Pakistan a Paki is highly insulting. Its equal to calling an African American a nigger. Its highly rude and shows just how small minded people in the world can be. The same can be said for the term raghead.

They are both racist. Raghead is obviously racist and Paki, although seeming quite innocuous as people here have said, is considered racist especially in the UK because it was picked up by the skinheads and hooligans of the 70s and 80s and used as a term of abuse against not only Pakistanis but anyone who looked vaguely asian.

I don't think "Paki" is offensive, but "raghead" comes off negative.

It's up to the discretion of the people being referred to by the title. If you ask a "Paki" or "Raghead" if they like to be called that and they say yes with pride then it would be OK in some circumstances. But most of us rightly know that if you asked these people the response far more likely is NO DON'T CALL US THAT. Offense depends on the person receiving the insult, if they feel insulted by a racial label then yes indeed it was racist.

What if you called some one who said "yes I like it" but there was someone else who it really upset present. The comment was not aimed at them but they were very offended. How does that fit in? I ask because I knew a couple of lads (one white, one asian) who, like most lads would take the mickey out of each other all day long. The white lad would lay into his mate all the time about smelling of curry, corner shops and and any other stereotype that sprung to mind. The Asian lad took it well and gave as good as he got. They were best mates and I know neither had an ounce of hatred in them. In a way it was very refreshing, If we were all like that maybe alot of tensions would disappear. But can it ever really be like that?

We are from the UK so yes for both. Raghead is definitely racist, no doubt. Paki is slightly different as it could be argued that it is akin to saying Aussie, which is never considered racist. In fact Aussies call Pakistanis Pakis without hesitation, the cricket commentators say it, Aussies can't believe Pommes consider it a racist word. I guess the reason why it is not accepted here is because in the past when paki was used it was often coupled with fkin or bastard in an aggressive, hate filled manner, as a people they suffered more abuse than most when coming to the UK. I have a few friends of Pakistani background and they say Paki, (so do those from Bangladesh interestingly), but if anyone called them that a fight would be imminent.

So would you call Prince Harry's remark of ''Paki,'' addressed to one of his comrades as offensive, even though he claims he was using it as a nickname? Is it politically correct to condemn the use of nicknames? I attended quite a few seminars a few years ago in both Manchester and Liverpool, and the matter of the word ''Paki'' was at the forefront of debate one particular day. This guy from Liverpool was adamant that he wasn't causing any offence by stating that he often used the term: ''going down the Paki Shop on the corner!'' He said it was common terminology, an idiom that the surrounding people used. It wasn't supposed to be offensive. I don't presume for one moment anyone asked the Pakistanis working in that shop if they found the term ''Paki Shop,'' offensive? I mean I don't know of one British person who finds the term Brit offensive. However, as you so rightly point out the derogative terms ''Paki F@ckin B@stard,'' and ''Paki scum.'' are very upsetting terms, and if the term ''Paki'' sounds disrespectful to Pakistani people then we should respect their wish for not using the term.

Raghead is a derogatory term; however, Paki is not. I call my British friends Brits, they call me a Yank...so what!

And how can calling someone a raghead or Paki be "racist"? Racism is an ideology that places a dominate race above a sub-race (an ideology). That doesn't fit the topic. In fact, people are using racism way to dang much. You can't blanket all injustices or hate with the lable of racism.

Prince Harry's got himself into a bit of a fix over in this country athling, he called one of his comrades ''Paki,'' around three years ago. The top brass have taken offence, and the media are having a field day. Harry's due to be reprimanded by his senior officer. Word has it that his remark was a racist comment, which may put some ethnic minorities off joining the armed forces. Poor old Harry is being made a scape goat! I would presume every soldier in the world has a nickname, one that all their comrades know them by.

Paki is clearly a contraction of Pakistani and nothing more. As such, it should be considered acceptable in my opinion. The Americans use the abbreviation "Pak" for Pakistani without any offensive intent. You hear politicians talking about the policies of the Pak government, for example. It's hard to see how the simple addition of the letter "i" could make it offensive.

There is a case to be made for the view that offensiveness is in they eye of the beholder. Recently, however, some black people in America have been objecting to the word "thug", claiming it is offensively racist. This is completely absurd in my view and I certainly won't be going along with it. At some point, rationality and common sense has to enter the picture. Therefore the supposedly offended group should not have absolute discretion when determining what is offensive and what is not.

Calling someone a raghead would usually be considered offensive, although in some contexts it could be considered humorous. Since it presumably refers to the religion of Islam, it is an example of religious prejudice rather than racial prejudice.

NIce to see you on here Hidell, I was hoping you would show up soon.

You have it about right. Personally I think the term Paki falls on the side of offensive even when common sense is used.

I would never call someone a Paki. But I would never call someone a Pakistani either. But if paki is short for Pakistani that would seam the same as calling someone a Brit instead of British.
Why should it be so hurtful?

Someone suggested that calling someone Black was offensive on FAA the other day. Who is it makes these decisions? ;-)
