Guess our Prince Charles would back you 100% on your debate Gott, I've got to say I agree, too. If
you ever get the chance to taste his freshly produced free range organic eggs, I'm sure you would
agree, they are definitely something else. Not saying that other eggs are genetically modified, but
the farming principals he lays out are second to none!....;-) |

Justsumguy's skepticism isn't entirely without merit, there are indeed cheats some organics are
doing. For example some free range chickens have literally a small strip of artificial turf outside
their pens which is so trivial none of them ever use it.
BUT, after reading Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma and also In Defense of Food I can confidently
say organic MOST of the time is better for us, the environment, and the economy than industrial
farmed foods. Most modern farming is so subsidized, so pumped up with stuff (petrofertilizers,
pest/herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormes, etc) and so doctored (genetically modified) and also so
government funded (we pay them through the nose to overproduce certain things) that the system is
unsustainable and the impact to the environment, the farmers, and the overall economy is massive.
Look, an organic apple is smaller and less perfect than an industrial apple, that's for an obvious
reason, but if you buy a locally produced apple untainted by pesticide you get a little nugget of
health, whereas if you buy one shipped from halfway across the country and covered with pesticide
and wax then you've just burned who knows how much oil to get your hands on it and you continue to
add to a growing pesticide level in your own body.
Buy local and organic when you can people. And if you don't believe me then read the two books I
referenced. |

There is no such thing. No food that you can buy hasn't been changed or adapted or sprayed for our
purposes. If you really want what most organic brands pretend towards put in a garden or buy what
the farmer down the road grows. Because they have shown that locally (in your area not mine) grown
produce increases your defenses to local allergens. Plus of course that is a lot less transportation
and packaging costs. |

If we had to rely on organic food, the planet would starve. Organic methods simply don't produce
enough to go around. Non-organic foods produce higher yields, less waste and bigger end-results.
Organic foods are not demonstrably better in any way, and are demonstrably worse in many ways. It's
all a bunch of ignorant hype with absolutely no scientific backing.
Give me genetically modified food any day. |

Organic has been recently proven (to my joy) to show that it shows no additional health benefits
over normal produce. The farmers who grow it are given a set guideline on what chemicals they can
spray on it and still class it as organic so anyone who only buys organic is basically buying an
expensive version of what everyone else eats. Genetically modified crops are much more beneficial.
They can be engineered so that they are more resistant to disease, have a bigger yield or size or
survive in harsher climates. This is hugely beneficial to 3rd world countries as they could grow
crops all year round without fear of losing them. |

Most studies I’ve read on organic foods and farming seem to have mixed results. But, personally, I
don’t think the garbage is worth as much as it costs. Have you seen the prices on this stuff?
Jesus Christ on crack it's expensive. |

What ya' got against pesticide/insecticides? I think they are the bread of life. |

Like most things that humans have gotten hold of, organic has become one of the biggest rip-offs
going.
Anyone who thinks people are growing fruits and vegetables without pesticides haven't done much
gardening.
True, it's better to eat fresh fruits and vegetables than processeed, but that's about all there is
to it.
Americans are currently being taken to the cleaners by the organic scam.
If it wasn't for pesticides and fertilizers, we would probably all be dead by now. |
