If all procedures are followed to the letter with no exceptions, then it has great potential. The
reason why Chernobyl occurred was because they were experimenting with how few control rods they
could have in the reactor. They had considerably less than the safe limit which caused the water to
boil, evaporate and turn into hydrogen which built up and exploded. |

The current standards are quite effective if maintained and enforced. There are still harmful
byproducts produced that are not effectively dealt with and some sort of of international standard
would have to be regulated and enforced. |

Chernobyl was better than a freak accident, it was a freak accident caused by bad design, design
which has now been changed. The French get 70% of their power from nuclear, we all should. It's
cheap, essentially renewable (there's plenty of uranium out there), now very safe and produces
little waste.
I must however question this:
"We no longer use nuclear warfare; in fact, we defy other countries who do."
Who is 'we'? The US? Name one country who uses nuclear warfare more than the US? No-one drops nukes
anymore, and the US has the biggest stockpile. |

Nuclear energy is cleaner and now safer than many other techniques that have become obsolete in the
process of producing energy. But we must always be aware of the dangers it can create, and never let
our security down. |

Just as long as you don't let him know you said that you'll be fine. Nuclear energy is the future in
my opinion. Eventually energy will be a nominal fee because of nuclear energy. |

Nuclear energy is only less damaging and less dangerous when it is done without people trying to cut
corners. The Chernobyl disaster happened both because of the type of reactor (graphite) and because
of the communist governments lack of concern for safety, and Three Mile Island accident happened
because the company tried to save a few bucks on construction and inspections.
There has never been a nuclear accident in countries where the nuclear reactors were built and run
by governments that had public oversight, accountability, and no attempts to finish on a budget nor
worry about cost overruns: Canada, England, France, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, and several others.
Sometimes, privatization isn't the solution to everything. |

I think as long as we live in an age where we are selective with which country can go nuclear I
cannot agree with the argument. If it is safe we should not have issues with other countries having
it. |
