I am not real clear on what Nike has done wrong..... I like that coat of theirs I bought one winter
it was really practical and so many compliments!!! Even more than my fur coat. You might be
surprised: Everyone asked me where i got my ski-jacket!
Nike, white down-filled, with medium-gray rayon-suede lining, zip-front.
Best coat I ever had.
Cost $70.00 3 or 4 years ago. |

Yes, unfortunately Nike's marketing--especially aimed at younger consumers and teenagers--has been
one of the reasons why owning brand-name clothing and shoes is now seen as a major status symbol
among school kids and often a "must have" if they are to avoid being bullied or teased. Nike seems
to be much more aggressive in this type of marketing than some of its main competitors, like Reebok,
which is not perceived to be nearly as trendy and "cool" as a Nike. Perhaps this is because Reebok
has become an Adidas subsidiary in recent years.
Yet if we accept that Nike is "killing society"--which may be an exaggeration--then we can at least
take comfort in the fact that society is slowly "killing" Nike and other brand names as well, mainly
by purchasing forgeries. Counterfeits are far cheaper than the real apparel and it is normally
impossible to tell the difference, at least at first glance. It's quite ironic that prominent
companies that have convinced society of the importance of owning brand-name items are now paying
the price for their actions. An increasing number of people agree that brand name items are
advisable to purchase over no-name products, but this interest has in turn led to the development of
a booming counterfeit industry, which thrives off of the cult built up around Nike and other brands. |

I don't think Nike is killing society some of their business practices are circumspect as they
should have emphasized the quality not the status of the product but to say they are killing society
is a bit of a reach. |

Nike's success is directly related to the prevailing philosophy of our time---materialism and
consumerism. Nike is a product of our culture. |
