Muslim Women Have A Healthier Body Image Than Their Western Counterparts
Muslim women are not as obsessed with their appearance as women in the West because Islamic societies generally do not promote beauty/celebrity magazines or have massive billboards with bikini wearing models all over the place. Rates of anorexia and such are negligibly lower in Muslim countries. That fact that Muslim women cover up means they don't pay attention to their bodies, because they know it doesn't matter.

I got a banner ad for "meet muslim women" showing a less-than-fully clothed woman on this page. Priceless

Muslim women hate their bodies and are embarassed to show them in fear that the simple existence of their bodies might make Muslim men do something bad. How is that a healthy body image?

If you are refering to the fundementalist muslim women then by in large they have no body image they entire self worth is defined by the approval of their male family members. Personally I find that culture of honor killings and physical abuse repugnent. Much like the FRLDS and other fanatical fundementalist christian church's culture. As for modern muslim women that are much like any other modern women in regards to body image.

It gives me the impression they're hiding something by being forced to wear burkhas. It is as if they should be ashamed of who they are. I don't think that's healthy.

How would I know? They are covered head to toe.

That is a sweet gesture. But it would depend if you meant women who are being tortured in the middle east by being bereft of the right to choose what to wear, or women who are muslim and choose the way they dress outside of the sexism in those regions.

They are forced to cover their bodies--they are not allowed to develop a healthy self respect for their womanliness on their own. Men paint the windows of their homes black so the women cannot see out of them. Like living in a coffin. This gives women an unhealthy image of everything about themselves, not just their bodies. I bet if these men could poke their wives eyes out and still get as much use from them, they would. These men want their wives to derive absolutely no joy of living, none at all. How can these women have healthy body images when some Muslims practice female castration in the hopes that girls so mutilated will never experience sexual pleasure? They want women to experience endless misery and emotional pain with no hope. I even think they want their women to go to hell when they die, too, but I am not too sure about that. These women live a life of horror, of living death. To me a burka is more like a death wrapping than anything else. There probably is not much anorexia with them because all that is left to them is food.

Well since muslim women are always covered head to toe in burkas which are forced upon them by men then I would have to go with no. At least women in western countries have independence unlike in the oppressive countries, in the west deciding for yourself is good, not being threatened with horrendous punishment like in Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Muslim women don't have a choice. It's also ok for their husbands to beat them if they're not obedient. Personally I think European women are under the least pressure.

I wouldn't know. We can't see their bodies. Their noses look kinda healthy.

Your take on Muslim women doesn't fit my experience. Most of the Muslim women I've known dress normally when at home and are into looking good.

Give it time. The Muslims are changing. You can't keep people down forever.

No way. 1) Being forced to cover up tells them theres something fundamentally wrong with them. 2) There are still degrees of difference in makeup and burkas/scarves and they use that wiggle room to try for individuality. 3) When behind closed doors many of them then do the major dress up and makeup. Just because they can't do it in public doesn't mean they don't do it at all. 4) Don't forget it's usually Muslim women who end up with the old acid in the face trick from jilted suiters. It's hard to have a healthier body image when your face is melted. 5) Women from more progressive Muslim countries - like Turkey - show much higher satisfaction levels than the women in more oppressive Muslim countries.

Firstly, your 4th point has nothing to do with the topic.

Secondly, are you seriously denying that Western women are under pressure to conform to certain ideals of beauty that exist in the West? A Muslim women could decide to leave her house with no make-up and without brushing her hair knowing she can't be ostracized or judged as her body is covered.

Thirdly, the secular attitude of "If you've got it, flaunt it" tells women to display their beauty to anyone and everyone . Islam teaches women that their bodies are like precious hidden jewels only to be revealed to their families and husbands. Which principle empowers women more?
