Organized religions may be based around the idea of a god, but its intentions are based solely on
the desires of its hierarchy. And what happens when someone, or a group of people, possess power
over numerous others? You guessed it. They often exploit that power for their own benefit. It
happens all the time. Organized religion is no exception. The only thing that bugs me though is why
someone would choose to be apart of a religious dominion that focuses more on the bad (i.e. Others
burning in Hell for eternity) than the good. Personally, I find little sense at all in choosing a
belief system where the vast majority of the world is punished for an infinite amount of time due to
less than a century of sin. Does indefinite suffering morally outweigh divine salvation in their
minds? If I were to choose a religious belief system, it wouldn't be one where people are scolded,
and ultimately penalized, for not following in my footsteps. That's simply malicious. |

Organized religion was begun as a selfcomfort by the ignorant: Primitive people were
afraid, so they personified natural things and called them "gods", or invented fables about how the
world began or work to explain what they didn't know.
Later, however, the power hungry realized that people's fear and belief in "gods" could be
exploited and was turned into shamanism and religion. To the deceitful and the "true believers",
religion was a quick route to accessing money, sex and power.
As long as the three great stimulants could be easily obtained by religion, it would exist and grow.
It was only when rational minds appeared that religion shrank or waned.
Soon the greedy, selfish and vicious also realized that religion enabled them to rationalize
reprehensible behaviour. Encouraging others to "do god's will" when it's really the leaders' became
easy as long as the public remained ignorant, as was the ability to rationalize raping nuns,
buggering altar boys and burying babies in the walls of churches. If any behaviour could be
rationalized by the godbots, it was, from the Crusades to Inquisition to Nazi Germany to islamic
fundamentalism. |

What most people fail to realize, is the major different between religion and spirituality.
These days, religion has turned into a business. Every faith wants to gather more followers, but
how? They think that they must build bigger and better churches to attract people. And so religion
is corrupt.
People think that being religious means attending church every Sunday and making a generous donation
to the collection plate. If you pray, then everything should be alright. How wrong they are.
In my view, a person can be 100% more spiritual with his god than the man who spends all his time in
a pew. Being spiritual involves living a good life and having a positive relationship with whatever
god you may choose.
In a whole, religion seems to have taken a turn for the worse. I have no problems with any religion
that is present today, but I do have a problem with its people. Christians, for example, are so
un-God-like. It's not that I have an issue with Christ, it's just his people.
Another contributing factor to the corruption of religion is of course brain-washing. It doesn't
have to be a cult for people to push their views on others. I feel it's an out-dated tradition for
the child to automatically accept whatever faith the parents are involved with.
I believe that the child should be exposed to many different religions and choose whatever works
best for him.
After all, religion shouldn't be structured. It should be based upon person spiritual experiences.
People treat religions as if they are so different; they have the same basic principles, so we
should be allowed to choose whatever religion fits best to us.
In conclusion, religion is a wide and varying topic. In all cases, it's a personal and life-changing
thing. |

My point is that much of religion is just a system. It is hollow and doesn't point to God. I would
say that most religion is manipulated to do evil things. I think God exists and his doctrine is
being exploited. I agree with many of the 'liberals' on this site in that fact that religion is used
for evil. Many systems in general are used for evil.
Bill Gates designs viruses and the antivirus software.
Banks fund both sides of a war and the nations become indebted to the bank.
Your organic foods have to meet state inspection and have all the 'standards' modernized foods
have.
If you filter through a lot of religions, many tell you to do evil things. Many religions are
manipulated to make good things become bad things and vice verse.
There is mass confusion in knowledge and actual facts and a lot of he said she said.
For all you newer members, I am not an atheist and many arguments I have been in were very
'conservative'. And I still believe I am that conservative. I think I just view things differently. |

I disagree with the overall debate topic and initial subtext yet largely agree with your subpost in
the For column. Yes I agree religion is a system, most of them contain some peculiarities which
sound downright vindictive or petty, and many religions are abused as a means to darker things.
However, I disagree that "much of our organized religion is evil", because on balance I think far
more of it is good than evil. The whole world would be a true hell if your claim were true. And in
your first examples where you list worshipping idols with cow heads - since when is a cow head evil?
Frankly a human figure nailed in suffering on a torture cross is far more evil than a horned icon
could be.
Religion is good, and bad, but I don't think it's evil by a long shot. |

First how dare you put this in the History section. Typical revisionist rhetoric.
Excuse me, but of those so called "evil" religions you speak of, how many of those cow worshipers or
sun worshipers justified Colonization of people they viewed as savages that needed Christ? How many
justified Slavery.
How many Justfied carving up South America in half by Popes so that one side was given to Portugal
while the other the Spain in the name of the Christ. Yet they never stepped foot in South America
while carving it up.
How many of them justified carving up the continent of Africa into 56 different countries to spread
their religious filth.
How many of them institutionally organized inquisitions in the name of Christ killing hundreds of
thousands of people they viewed as non believers.
How many of them conducted The 100 years war over religion.
Who formed witch hunts and burned people at the stake in the name of Christ because they were viewed
as non believers?
And you speak of an evil religion between tribal sun worshipers who pray to things that provide them
their daily living of light, water and food.
They did not create doctrine to push upon other people who did not believe.
You have a limited view of history. In fact a myopic view of history. Before following a religion
you should at least understand its history. Not gloss over what made it strong in the first place
and it wasn't through voluntary conversion but institutional religious mandates.
Your religion walked around wanting to act as though they were the Christian God with the "believe
in Christ" or death attitude. Or slavery. Or Colonialism. Or worse, WAR. |
