Most Martial Arts Are A Joke. A Competent Streetfighter Would Wipe Out A Karate Black-belt Easily.
The practice of martial arts is hyped up in films and video games. The truth is that most of these so-called martial arts are about as much use as ballet-dancing when it comes to a danger situation in the real world. Students who learn these "arts" learn primarily how to fight against other people who have learned the same disciplines and fight in the same way. To a streefighter, not subject to the bizarre constraints of a specific discipline, these people are easy prey. All the time you read about martial arts black belts being beaten up.

When I was in high school there was a fight between a black belt and a street tough. The black belt won, but it took almost five minutes, and the street guy nearly had him a couple of times. In the end we all pretty much agreed that it wasn't so much the karate that won it, as the shape he was in from practicing it.

It's true, while the martial art guy is making his bows and ceremonial groaning and what not the street guy would tear the martial arts guys face off

A street fighter has more toughness so he can take more punches and be more efficient in blood fight.

I agree. There are some people who really can do that stuff, but mostly its just people chopping the air and making funny sounds.

Most of martial arts is spent on the defensive side of the fight, while any gangster will just punch him. This is a no-brainer.

Yes, the Eastern martial arts are essentially forms of ballet-dancing, more like synchronized swimming or gymnastics than genuine combat disciplines. For example, the high kicks used I don't believe are effective combat moves. They may look sensational in Hollywood movies. In reality, however, your opponent could grab your leg fairly easily and use it to unbalance you or hold you in a vulnerable position. It is also almost impossible to deliver a forceful blow with the feet in any move that wouldn't leave you massively vulnerable if it failed to connect.

I think Bruce Lee, towards the end of his life, realized how absurd most of the traditional martial arts were, with moves and practices that were in there for decorative flourish rather than combat effectiveness. In developing his own martial art, he tried to find a way around this.

There are probably other martial arts which are more down-to-earth and therefore useful. The Israeli combat technique Krav Maga, for example, might be one of these, and perhaps the Filipino martial art (whose name I forget, but Jason Bourne uses it in the Bourne films) which sanctions using improvised weapons such as pens and rolled-up magazines.

I think you may be alluding to a common misconception, Hidell. Many Eastern martial arts are not unnecessarily flamboyant; they are made so by Hollywood. I used to practice Ninjitsu, and all of the instructors were remarkably scathing to the nature of such fighting as it is portrayed in films.

To be a black belt only takes a couple of years, and really isn't a show of being a great fighter, it really only means you performed a certain number of forms adequately. So you can be a black belt and not a competent fighter, so you are right, a street fighter (may or)could really kick his butt Mike Tyson was a perfect example, he was a street fighter from harlem, to world champion.

There's several degrees of black belt. Some people who practice martial arts compete, and some do not. I would think that those who do are much more competent in a real fight.

They are called 'arts' for a reason, most over hyping comes from Anime where the fighter can launch over 9000 punches in a few seconds and then fly in the air to perform some kind of attack using the elements or inner energy like Ki.

Street fighters are commonly portrayed as the 'Bad guys', act clumsy, move predictably and ultimately get beaten every single time.

I wouldn't say it's a joke though, if they don't provide good fighting techniques, they provide good advice on how to stay in shape and keep a steady mind. I agree with the second part of your statement.

Being trained in martial arts would help you control the adrenalin, but in a rule-free street fight I've read they could utilise less than 15% of their moves.

Those who are grandmasters in the arts have incredible skill; there discipline could blow the irrational aggression of a thug out of the water.

A martial artist would have better reaction time. He'll also be more likely to survive because if e's losing, he could run away faster than a bulky so called "street fighter".

Not quite a street fighter has more grit so he will be able to counter the fast reaction time and the bulky street fighter will have more leg strength son he will have more endurance.

You pit a man of equal weight
and equal fighting experience
and height
to a man who has trained technique
i think i know who would win

the fact many black belts could get beaten up is because they aren't real fighters, don't know how to take a punch or a kick properly

No, and unless you are referring to official police, I think it's a shame that people from your (my) country even uses the term "street-fighter".

I KNOW TAEKWONDO AND IT IS NOT USELESS!!!!!! Why would anyone say that in the first place? You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Martial arts are about concentration and discipline. There is no WAY a streetfighter would have a chance.

Martial arts have been practiced for hundreds of years. They have had the time to perfect their art. Street fighting is the one that is overhyped in games like Grand Theft Auto. Karate would win hands down.

Martial Arts is about defence and not picking fights with people. What you see in movies and video's is glorified Jackie Chan Karate. Martial Arts is about reacting to what happens to you.

I studied Tae Kwon Do for several years and I can tell you martial arts are quite dangerous. I can't remember most of the stuff I learned (it's been years), but I do remember it was all quite dangerous.

Being a black belt, I find that I have to defend the martial arts. Yes, if someone used the exact movements and techniques taught, they would get slaughtered, because they are intended to be used with some initiative too. The art I am proficient in was taught to Korean soldiers to improve reaction time and give them a chance in unarmed combat, so it can't have been entirely useless

Martial arts isn't about dancing around Jackie Chan stylee, they are about fighting education as well. They teach you where to hit and how to achieve maximum effect. That coupled with some common sense and you're laughing. Someone hits you in the stomach. BAM. You're winded and in pain. They're mocking you. THWACK. You're crushing their trachea with one hand or you've broken their breast bone so they can't breate. Street fighters are used to prolonged, messy fights. Martial artists possess the skill and the fitness to end that fight with one or two strikes.

I certainly know I can handle myself and have done on several occasions. Mind you, they don't make you invincible. Even black belts are vulnerable to a lynch mob and a lead pipe. We're just better prepared for the eventuality.

Karate owns, you can kill people with your bare hands with a single hit if you learn how, without too much effort

Obviously you watch a lot of bad martial arts movies/whatever on TV.

Martial arts like karate is not about beating somebody up like a streefighter.
It's about discipline and self defence.

Streetfighting is like a game.
Punch wherever you can and as hard as you can. By just using one horizontal hand movement on the throat, you can kill a person.

I know that one of my friends is black belt in karate who finally got a man in jail. He was done for raping 24 woman before and she defended herself. That's what you do to handle 'dangerous situations' in the world.
