Most Influential Guitarist Of Our Time Is Les Paul
Les Paul is probably the most underrated guitar player ever. He created the first solid body electric guitar, he invented overdubbing, tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording. Keep in mind here that I am not calling Les Paul the GREATEST guitar player of our time. I am calling him the most INFLUENTIAL based on what he has contributed to the music industry as a whole.

Paul made two of the most important inventions in music history:

1) The electric guitar, as it exists today. There were amplified guitars before it, but not in the same form.

2) Multitrack recording. By using multiple recordings and overlaying them, Paul was able to eschew having a band in the studio, able to do all the parts himself solely on guitar.

Even without the two of those, Paul's work with Mary Ford was amazing. They had hit after hit during the 1940s and 1950s. Many of the great players of the 1970s and 1980s are very aware of his influence, and he has been the subject of many musical tributes.

The only other names which merit mention in the same breath would be Robert Johnson (definitely) and Chuck Berry (not so much).

The only recognizable thing Les Paul did was put his name on the awesomest Gibson ever. He is a good guitarist and yes underrated, but he isn't in the same class as the guys opposite.
