Morality Came Before Religion
Morality comes from empathy; empathy is a natural evolution for a social species. Many higher social species have been shown to exhibit examples of empathy and what we would call selfless or moral behavior. As far as I know no other species has been shown to be religious.

I didn’t think about it at the time I started this debate but there is an implication here that religion is a manmade construct and therefore god is a human conceit. But if you think about it even a religious person would have to think that every other religion, save their own, must have a human origin. Anyway I think humans developed morality as a refinement of our natural social instincts. As this morality became more detailed it would require an explanation when it was taught. That’s where religion came in. When people ask me what reason a non religious person has to be moral this is my answer.

Hard question here.

Morality, defined as "the good", came first. God was first. God is good. So, God is moral. God and his moral nature came before man and therefore before religion.

Most certainly, the human condition came before religion.

not so, my good friend ;-)
mankind was created in the Garden of Eden, with a religion on that same day. The human condition rose AFTER Sin entered the scene.

I think that's true. Morality came before religion. Universals.

Ravens are unique I believe even within the Corvid family in that they have been known to share food when it is most scarce in the subarctic winters, but to be more competitive at other times when there is plenty to go around. I don't know what religion ravens are, but many Native Alaskan tribes see the raven as their almighty creator.

Though religion takes a large interest in moral behaviour, I would agree that it did not invent the concept of morality itself.

I think morality was perhaps a practice of social animals before it was even a concept. And while religion may be the child of morality, the parent does not require the child in order to exist.

I am taking the devil's advocate side here;-)
this round of debate:

Here is the theory to shove my point home on this topic:

" THE THEORY OF THE OBJECT AND THE SHADOW" :

1. There is an object,
2. There is a shadow follows object,
3. Shadow could not exist without object,
4. Shadow is not the object,
5. Shadow proves objects existence,
6. Object does not need shadow in order to exist,
7. Shadow's entire form comes from Object 100% inarguable.

There is a God,
We are His proof of workmanship,
Religion is the practice,
Science proves Religion is Real, religion exists without need of Science, but Science cannot exist without religion.

Theory of Object And Shadow, By Scorpion 9/3/2008.

Thank you for this debate opportunity
*bows*
*smiles*

Sincerely,
Scorpion.

The first part of your theory is extremely logical, applause, if you are an object and you have a shadow following you about. However, for your theory to work there must be light ;-) Now for the second part of your theory. Are you stating that God is this light, and we are the shadows of his creation? And we follow the morality emanating from the light? And that we have now turned our religious dedication into a science. And, is this morally correct?
