We Should Have A Military Draft
I think we should have a military draft.

We should,
we are running out of men and or women to send to Iraq. A draft isn't the only way to help but it might for a while until we get back or our feet.

I agree. If anyone should have a good beer, it's the military.

Then go and sign up. There's "selective registration" forms at your local post office, right now.

Yes, we are currently registering our young men and women for forced conscription into our military. Free travel to exciting, exotic locations all around the world!

Of course, you might die. But what's life without a few risks?

The best thing about a draft is that it would re-integrate our "foreign activities" back into the American conscience, as the all-volunteer force is a very segregated part of society these days.

I am against our "war-like" tendencies, but as long as we're spending over half of our national wealth, and betting our entire future on those tendencies, then we should have a draft, and start with all eligible sons and daughters of both houses of Congress, no exception.

The next president will surely institute it, unless he's Ron Paul. Okay, the next president will surely institute it.

There is not need for a draft at this time.

Exactly why should we have a draft? The only reason to have a draft is in an emergency when we need to mobilize large numbers of people and the current military is understaffed. That certainly isn't the case in the modern military, in fact, the chances of ever having a draft again in the United States is somewhere between slim and none.

No, you cant MAKE someone fight against their will. Fi the people handing out the draft notices need more people in the army then they can join them selves.

I don't usually disagree with you grokit, but I think you've missed the boat here.

A draft is needed when the military doesn't have enough soldiers to meet it's obligations. Prior to any draft being instituted American forces need to be removed from UN service.

Second, we're not even at that point. The number of soldiers in Iraq will be decreasing. We are winning and will win in Iraq unless someone like Ron Paul or Barack Obama get elected. I am not concerned about either of them.

I know that many want to blame the "destruction of the US military" on W, but the truth is that W did no such thing. I'm sure you'll agree that it only takes a tiny bit of intellectual honesty to know that IF the US military has been "destroyed", it has far more to do with the drastic down-sizing and decreased spending implemented by Clinton.

I personally think the military is just fine and will be going forward.

The notion of rampant "stop-losses" was never an "issue" until Hollyweird got it's hands on the term. Stop losses are not that common. I agree they suck, but lets not pretend like they're really going on to the extent that one movie would have you believe.

By the way, doesn't McCain have a couple boys serving or who have served during the war? I think he does...

Yes, he does, and Obama won't even try and "swift-boat" him for his troubles in Hanoi, either. I actually agree with Palin when she said tonight that, "there is only one candidate in this election that actually fought for us", or something to that effect. But I still can't help but picture her in go-go boots.

And I have to disagree, our troops are definitely over-extended with the two wars we are already in, and McCain has all but promised us "another 100 years" of war if he is elected.

The only reason we don't already have a draft fully instituted now is because Bush is actually sticking by his campaign promise not to institute one. I have to applaud him for that.

But there are just as many, if not more, private contractors fighting with our troops right now than there are troops, in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and they will be manning our permanent bases long after our soldiers come home (if they ever really do), in order to protect our "investment" over there. And these mercenaries get paid ten times as much, relegating many of our troops to being their bodyguards.

We're pretty much "all in" at this point, even if Hollyweird doesn't want to admit it!

Having a military draft is a ignorant idea.

People are volunteering for it because they want to serve so let them . Don't make people who don't want to serve, serve.

Were suppose to have have freedom, that means in making our own decisions too. If someone decides to then that's there choice. Our so called "war-like tendencies" are better than when your ideas. I disagree with war in general but your idea of making people do something they want to do is unfair to many.

As our Fearless Leader constantly reminds us, "freedom isn't free".

Wondering what you meant with "are better than when your ideas"?

The draft isn't "my idea", any more than these wars are, but we're already doing forced "stop-loss" conscriptions, and paying mercenaries ten times an enlisted man's salary to double up our troops.
