McCain Is No War Hero.
Being shot down from your plane doesn't make you a war hero. It means you're either unlucky or incompetent. Neither qualifies as heroism. America has an unheathy tendency to celebrate the most unlucky or incompetent of its military professionals as heroes. To be a true hero you need to show superior skill or bravery. McCain has done neither. He is as phony as a three-dollar bill.

Well what is a hero? By greek definition: Someone who embodies the characteristics of their society but has one major flaw that leads to their destruction. Is mccain alive? Ok then he's not a hero yet. But that's purely by greek definition.

In my opinion they're all idiots for giving up their lives to support a country that uses them to line their own pockets. We are but slaves to our government. What's the common belief? I must yes must work to live a happy life. What is work? Supporting the government and economy in most cases. My life doesn't matter as long as the government survives.

Senator McAncient is NO war hero. Everything about his publicly acknowledged military record is cherry-picked and white-washed as a result of of the legacy inherited from his family. He very likely is a Manchurian Candidate, though admittedly something went awry in the traing of the 'angry' part of his brain. He has very little self control, as he exhibited by calling his wife Cindy a "c*nt," in front of reporters.

Perhaps it was the shortcomings of his "training" which has kept him from being more successful in his presidential bids, present and past.

The McCainchurian Candidate was named "Songbird" by the Vietcong because he was willing to spill his guts before the Vietcong ever touched him.

Manchurian was never tortured. The only injuries Manchurian suffered were two broken arms, and those injuries happened when he failed to pull in his arms after ejecting from his plane.

Manchurian crashed at least three planes during his training, four if you count the one in Vietnam, and finished 790th out of 795 at the Naval Academy.

Just like George Putz, Manchurian limped along living off his father's reputation. It was Admiral McCain who kept his son from being tried for treason (three years of making propaganda for the communists) while soldiers who signed a single paper and went home, without divulging any secrets, were treated as traitors.

Songbird McCain is as inept and corrupt as George Putsch, and will continue the illegal occupations. Anyone who expects differently is blind to reality.

McCain's medals were not for anything he did in combat. In fact, he spent less than 20 hours in combat in total. All of his medals were for the bravery he supposedly displayed while a prisoner of war. These medals were awarded routinely to prisoners of war when they were repatriated. The citations state that he heroically resisted torture. Yet there are no witnesses to this supposed torture, and by McCain's own admission in a book he wrote about his experiences, he actually volunteered to give militarily significant information to his captors in return for hospital treatment. McCain even signed a goofy confession, declaring himself to have been a "black devil in the sky" or some such nonsense.

The only significant question in relation to McCain's shoot down is whether it was the result of misfortune or incompetence. To answer that, you just need to look at his career as a military aviator as a whole. He lost FIVE planes over the course of his career. Any normal pilot who lost planes like McCain did would have been kicked from the service. But McCain's father was an admiral, so he got away with it. McCain was an incompetent pilot, not a war hero.

I believe that Sen. John McCain is a fine man, although I don't agree with him politically. War hero? No. The Congressional Medal of Honor, The Silver Star, The Navy Cross are national recognition of a war hero. Read the citations that accompany these medals. I also don't believe that military service to your country qualifies that person for public office. McCain cites his experience as commanding officer in the Navy. That doesn't relate to the business world where you have to generate the finances to operate your company. He was working with tax money ... Big difference.

Any body willing to suit up and fight for one's country's freedom is a hero may not a "war hero" but a hero indeed

I think that McCain deserves a lot more respect then he has received. I myself think that he is a hero.

Yeah no doubt!!! President Clinton is a draft dodger. Its all good when draft dodgers sleep in the white house, while vietnam vets sleep in card board boxes.

Hidell: There is a significant difference between being treated "like a prince" and being treated nicely while detained in a prison camp, perhaps receiving an extra spoonful of gruel a day.

When one is captured and held as a prisoner of war for five years in a North Vietnamese prison, I think that we can safely assume that torture will come into the picture sooner or later. Torture served as a standard way of obtaining information from detained individuals in all Communist countries and Vietnam is probably not an exception. That McCain was honest about the fact that he broke down on at least two occasions and provided his Vietnamese interrogators with (largely useless) information should not disqualify him as a war hero, nor should the fact that his plane crashed and he was captured.

Nowhere does it say that the only way to be considered a war hero is if one scores some type of victory in battle. Heroism involves more than just winning on the front. Showing humanity and compassion for others in the most trying circumstances, demonstrating endurance and perhaps even putting one's life in danger by doing this, surely qualifies as a heroic deed. McCain's refusal to accept repatriation (which is why he spent over five years in the prison camp to begin with) is surely a strong sign of courage, resolve and humanity.

In his book McCain admits that he received privileged treatment in the camp after they learned he was the son of an admiral. He says he was treated like a "crown prince". When the offer of repatriation was made, McCain was ordered to refuse it by his military superior in the camp, so there was no special personal bravery involved.
