Marijuana Should Be Legal To People Over 18yrs

If alcohol and smokes is legal than why cant weed be legal as well, i disagree with all other drugs but weed is the least harmful compared to other drugs and is just as bad for you as alcohol and smokes so why is it illegal....

If weed was legalized and regulated then you could at least be fairly sure in what was in your weed, as opposed to when it's cut by street dealers.
Personally I'd prefer if weed was legal instead of alcohol.

I think maybe weed should be categorized with alcohol, as in 21 is the age that you can do both, but sure...I don't have a problem with it. We're going to legalize alcohol and not weed? That's sort of hypocritical, don'cha think?

Miller...I don't pretend to be neutral.  I actually really do not know you personally and , therefore, I cannot dislike you personally.  There aren't many people who I can think of that can come across in the offensive manner that you manage to resort to before even making an attempt at taking another point of view and realizing that we are not all the same and do not all share the same opinions.  Facts are facts, but to berate people for their beliefs and opinions just because you do not agree is childish and offensive.  That is where I can honestly say that I do dislike your personality in those instances.  I don't pick at you when you express your opinion without antagonizing others as your first course of action.  Too bad that those posts are in the minority where your participation in debates is concerned.  Many people do resort to some name calling and other types of attacks while debating, but they do not seem to seek out the same people just to leave a message that can only be taken as offensive.

Marijuana stinks like horse feces, it's smoke so it affects unwilling bystanders, and is generally used by low-lifes who wouldn't qualify for more than flipping burgers.

Having said that, it's not addictive, does not lead to crime or to the use of other drugs, and it can alleviate pain in ways that many other drugs can't. And other than bamboo, there is no plant that is as quick-growing or useful in many applications as is marijuana hemp.

So why isn't it legal? It was made and kept illegal due to overreaching prohibition rules and kept illegal now for the same reasons. During prohibition in England, expensive alcohols were permitted because they made money and the very wealthy could pay for it, while cheap alcohol was illegal because distillers didn't profit from it. That's why US drug prices are so high and want to keep marijuana off the market: Drug companies want a monopoly, and a naturally growing plant can't be copyrighted or controlled if it's legalized. Anyone could obtain seeds and grow their own.

Marijuana stinks even more if it is old. Fresher marijuana doesn't smell as bad. The more potent the plant is, the stronger the smell is, but that attribute in itself does not stink.

Definitely. I know plenty of people who've smoked it before, and they're fine. It's overuse that creates problems, just as over-using alcohol, tobacco or even caffiene can create problems in the long-term.

Wow. Some responses sound like 11-year-old who were just indoctrinated with the propaganda of a D.A.R.E. Program (which does not reduce later consumption of drugs). Chris94 -- I research and teach psychopharmacology, so I'm qualified as one of those proffeshinals you claim would say that pot is 10 times worse than tobacco, I can't back up your assertion, dude. Neither would the majority of researchers in the field. The chair of the AMA argued virulently against the illegalization of marijuana in the 1930s, but science was trumped by yellow journalism. Many a story was written about the violent effects the drug had on Mexicans and blacks.

Poman549, you'll be pleased to know that bashing the tar out of druggies and throwing them in jail is still the number one sport of the judicial system. Mandated sentences require early release of rapists and murderers to make room for the druggies (70% of federal prison population, I believe). And it remains an effective method of locking up the Mexicans and blacks. The rich folk go to rehab.

Because pot is not legal nor regulated, it is much easier for teens to obtain than booze in many areas. That would be an interesting research study -- the association of alcohol and pot use with crime, auto fatalities, etc.

I am for....i have met many people older then me with families that do smoke weed and turned out alright.....

And popman many people under 25 don't know how to handle there alcohol consumption either so whats the differences...there's more alcoholics with problems out there then there are people who smoke weed...also, weed can not even be compared to alcohol or any other drug when talking about problems....alcohol causes more problems then any other external influence out there...they don't legalize it because there is no way the govnt would be able to profit off of it..simple as that

They could tax it in exactly the same way they do cigarettes, very simple. The reason it is not legal is because it would be political suicide. There is so much ignorance regarding this subject a government would lose an election by legalising it.

It's not an extreme drug that cause havoc and it's use is sometimes medicinal. It would decrease a lot of crime, too. I've heard that weed has been legal in Australia for a long time and their crime rate is very low.

That's inaccurate to say the least.

There are way too many people that smoke weed to establish a basic trend in their intellectuality.

In fact, I am rather confident that the world's greatest minds have done it at least once.

What is your reasoning behind your claim which states that you have to be stupid to try marijuana? You probably are still caught up in that preteen phase where you plunge mindlessly into a facade immersed within all these senseless notions of propaganda against things such as that.

If you are stupid for simply trying marijuana, then you must also be stupid for drinking, for riding a rollercoaster, speeding, trying to climb a mountain, or anything that involves any type of small risk. Have you ever tried any of those? Or do you just hide in your mothers basement from the troubles and dangers of the world? I'm sure you don't, and you are not stupid for doing so.

Largely true is the point. Everything in life has risks in one way - why be so attentive to those of marijuana.

Well done.  On the 61st post you finally make a point.  Not a very detailed one but it is a start and at least you are consistent in that you would ban drinking as well.

Before we start - drugged or drinking driving is automatically a bad thing and should be punished.  We agree on that. However if someone works hard all week and has a joint with their friend, watches a movie, has a nice evening and goes to bed happy where is the harm.  The act of smoking in itself is harmless to anyone but the smoker - but that should be their choice - if you disagree then ban burgers.

How can you regulate something if it is illegal?  When you make something illegal it doesn't stop its usage, you recognise this fact when you say that people disregard the legal alcohol limit.

Why should people who are completely responsible not be allowed to enjoy a glass of wine or a smoke just because there are a minority who are irresponsible?

Literally willing to kill over it?  explain yourself, what does that mean, are you talking about weed or booze?

Here are reasons for it to be legal.
1)  Alcohol and cigarettes are.
2)  You could regulate it's strength and purity.
3)  It can be taxed and the revenues put to a multitude of good uses.  Perhaps even spent on stopping the trade of the serious drugs like crack and smack.
4) It takes away the business of criminals.  Whilst it is legal the ones getting rich are unscrupulous crooks.
5) Cannabis can be used as relief for sufferers of many conditions,as widely accepted.
6) Why criminalise many otherwise law abiding and decent citizens.  Many of the countries top minds will have smoked marijuana.  Good job they never got caught or maybe they would be flipping burgers.  What an unnecessary waste.
7)  You live in the land of the free - as you undoubtedly agree - so how on earth is it right to take away such a freedom of choice.  It harms no one.
8)  By making a naturally growing weed illegal you, in effect, making nature against the law.  You are saying god made a mistake by letting pot grow.

Now.  It is your turn to address these points and tell me why you disagree.  We are getting somewhere here, keep it up.

I agree that marijuana, [i:if] used responsibly, harms noone other than the person consuming it, but the honor system would be the only enforcable means by which to ensure that they are not going to go out and drive under the influence, and I think we all know how well that works.

1. They shouldn't be, but the toothpaste is already out of the tube, so the best we can do is to keep marijuana illegal as a means of damage control to keep things from getting even worse than they already are.

2. As it is police can't even keep drunk drivers off our roads, so what in the world makes you honestly believe that they would be able to regulate a drug another drug that it has been proven people are willing to break the law to get their paws on.

3. Is that all you care about, money? Perhaps we should legalize child pornography and child prostution  then, and have the government regulate them. Sure, it would be exploiting innocent children and all, but who cares as long as the revenues would be going to good use, right?

4.  How exactly do you propose that said  drug money should be spent? Should  it go to D.A.R.E. or other  programs teaching kids to stay away from drugs?

5. So can other [i:legal]] drugs I refuse to buy into the laughable excuse that potheads love to use that thyey smoke pot because if it's medicinal value.

6. Should someone who is a serial killer be let off the hook? The fact that someone "only"  willfully commits one crime doesn't change or detract from the fact that that crime was commited and willfully so to boot.

7. Freedom of choice that doesn't negatively affect others. My rights stop where another's begin.

Excellent, well done, you are learning to actually make some points.  You have come along way, next step is to actually apply some logic and consistency.

So who kills over weed?  That is a big statement it is only fair you explain what you mean.  No one kills over weed to my knowledge.

Anyway, to reply.

1) Fair enough, like I say it is to your credit that you are consistent in saying that alcohol and cigarettes should be illegal also.  Although I would say that by keeping something illegal doesn't seem to be curbing its use.  I could go and buy weed in any city or town I wanted within a day of arriving.  Only difference is I am then at the hands of people who could also promote much harder drugs.  I would prefer my child to buy from a reputable vendor rather than frequent these types of characters.

2) You miss the point.  Laws could easily be passed governing the strength and content of the weed.  You would need a license to sell it so would have to comply if you wanted to stay in business.

3) No.  One again point missed, surprisingly as it is not a tricky concept to grasp.   Marijuana gets sold anyway so why the hell not tax it and put the revenues to good use rather than in the hands of criminals.  Your odd example has a glaring flaw and you even pointed it out yourself.  It harms people, weed doesn't.

4) Yes that would be a good start.  I take it you were being sarcastic but what on earth is the problem with educating people to the realities of drug use.  Better than saying "don't do drugs, drugs are bad".  That leaves the door open for others to exploit.  Truth and facts have to be a good thing.  Another good use that I mentioned and you ignored would be to crack down on the harder, very dangerous and life destroying drugs.  Also that man power that is used up by going after weed could be better used stopping the trade in smack and crack.  Seems very obvious.

5) No they don't - they smoke because they like getting stoned.  It is a fact however that pot can be used for many medicinal purposes by other people.  You want to criminalise them for using something that relieves them of a lot of pain.  What a waste of resources, not to mention incredibly unfair.

7)  once again - no.  Obviously.  You have said many times about comparing apples and oranges yet you do it here.  The point is it shouldn't be a crime, just like having a well deserved beer on a Friday shouldn't be a crime.  It harms no one.

Marijuana is far more toxic and carcinogenic than cigarette smoking. Its use also leads to brain damage. England legalized it for medical use for a short time. When that country found it causes lung cancer at a far higher rate than cigarettes, and that medical users were developing brain abnormalities, they made it illegal again.

I like the idea of using certain drugs medically, but I know if we legalize any of it there'll be incredible abuse of it. There's just too many stupid people out there who will create problems.

geezes i don't know...why don't we throw people who are addicted to cigarettes and coffee thrown in jail also because drugs are found in those products too...for one reason, we need them....people need coffee, not so much cigarettes..would you throw an MS patient in jail because he needs to smoke weed to help the pain.....
