Overpaid in the sense of what they do for society, perhaps. But we cant look at it that way. I am an
aircraft mechanic working for a US airline. My job is important to public safety. However, there are
10s of thousands of people that do what I do and more being trained every day. Not so true for pro
athletes. Their numbers are more rare as well as their talents. The market (employers) know this. If
I could get paid, say, $10 million a year for turning wrenches, of course Id take it. But, the
market doesn't offer me this because the next fellow will work cheaper. If Becks screws up, maybe
they loose that day. If I screw up bad enough, people could die. No one ever said capitalism was
fair. |
