Kids 'mess' around anyways. But a 12 year old can have sex.(not that young though) They cant drive
and it'd be hard to support a possible baby and a job.
They shouldn't play with something like this because there are undoutedly potential consequences.
People solicite sex and bribe with sex at these young ages. Kids don't always think of the downsides
and what you get involved in. |

I'd love if this wasn't true, because I'm still a teenager (just, 18), but children are idiots.
They/we can't be trusted to take major decisions. Why do you think 16-17 year old can't vote, marry
(without their parents permission), fight in the army (frontline troops are restricted to 18+), buy
alcohol or cigarettes? Those laws are the UK, but they are typical of the Western World with some
variations. To be perfectly honest the levels of STIs in teenagers suggest that even 16 may be a too
low age of consent, though we have to balance this all with the likelihood of the law stopping the
problem and the usefulness of education instead of legislation. |

I wish there was some way for young people to experiment safely in those areas but there isn't and
the consequences can be dire. Of course young people do experiment or at least I did when I was
young but it can be risky.
On a side note yu_yevin does have a point about the inappropriate outfits that a lot of girls wear
these days. The other day I saw a girl who couldn't have been more than 12 wearing pink short shorts
that spelled out 'nasty' in rhinstones across the back. And she was at the supermarket with her
mother. I literally wanted to slap the woman and ask her what in the world she was thinking letting
her daughter go out like that.
Am I just an old fuddy duddy or something? I mean don't get me wrong I like a saucy outfit as much
as the next red blooded male, but on a 12 year old? Give me a break. |

I'm neither in favor or raising or lowering the age of consent. What I AM in favor of is better
defining the gray areas in the years preceding legal consent so if someone violates them it is more
clear what the consequences are. For example: 1) If a high school senior and a sophomore choose to
have sex it's ridiculous to charge the senior with statutory rape based on the slight age
difference. They're both still in high school anyway. 2) If a relationship precedes one of them
graduating and becoming above consent age but their high school relationship continues then once
again it's ridiculous the older person would be charged with statutory rape. It wasn't like a
complete stranger above the age instigated the sex, it started when both were in the same school.
3) The threshold for "sex" needs to be better defined. Intercourse vs oral vs kissing vs touching
vs cell phone naughties all are different actions with different severities, yet in some cases the
law defines all those acts as sex or some form of abuse of a minor and in fact could require the
older teens who did them to register as sex offenders. |

They should raise the age of consent. |
