I think Laocoon is the most beautiful piece of Hellenistic work in the world. Looted by Napoleon, seen and ranked by Pliny as the greatest work of art. Preferred more than paintings and cast subjects. However over the past centuries Laocoon's arm has stuck out like a sore thumb...;-)

Laocoon's right arm was returned to the figure and replaced into its correct position half way through the last century. However it is the most exquisite piece of sculpture in the world.

From the Millions of people whom have poured into St. Peter's Square, Rome, and then travelled onward towards the exquisite Sistine Chapel, within the Vatican Museums, in search of enlightenment and knowledge. I wonder how many have taken a profound look at the magnificent statue of Laocoon, which was looted by Napolean, and then returned to the Vatican City. It is a piece seen and ranked by Pliny the Elder as the greatest piece of art work in the world, preferred by him more than paintings. The controvercy surrounding Laocoon, defending his two sons from sea serpents, which was amazingly created out of a single block of marble, has fooled thousands of Writers', Poets', and Artists over the past centuries. Gothhold Ephraim Lessing's dissertation on Poetry, and Plastic Art, uses Laocoon as a peg on which to hang his great-unfinished treatise. However, when Lessing wrote his famous piece, like numerous of other Writers', Artists' and Poets', whom, have all been fascinated with the sculpture of Laocoon, (the famous Seer and son of Priam, who warned against bringing the gigantic wooden horse into Troy, - so eloquently recorded and penned by Virgil, in 'The Aeneid'), how many knew they were all being misled by Loacoon's missing right arm, which was not found with the rest of the sculpture, when it was rediscovered in 1509, on the Esquine Hill, Rome. However, ever since Laocoon's right arm was returned to the figure half way through the last century, and fixed once again in its rightful correct position behind his head. Controversy has arisen. Thousands of replica models of this beautiful piece have become obsolete, simply because the fake relica arm was pointing downwards in the wrong direction. Michael Angelo, who designed this arm, and embellished many of the pieces striking contorts onto his own sculptures was even fooled too! Just goes to show us all, art can sometimes fool the best of us...;-)

(1) My First Piece

This guy makes Goliath seem like a defenseless little homunculus, and it would take more than your statue of David to bring him down with a small stone hurled from a sling...;-):

The Greatest UBERMENSCH of all warriors. Achilles. His mother dipped him into the river Styx after his birth to make him invulnerable in battle. He has got to be the most formidable warrior of all time...;-) However, he did have one weakness, do you know what it was?

(2) Second Piece Helen. Christopher Marlowe's Faustus, greatest wish of all was that he could see the most stunningly beautiful, glamorously gorgeous delectable Lady the world had ever known up to the end of the sixteenth century. As you well know there's a more delectably beautiful Lady living in the world today....;-) Marlowe wrote, (Fautus request to Mephistophilis): ' One thing, good servant, let me crave of thee. Bring that fair Helen, whose admired worth made Greece with ten years war afflict poor Troy. Whose sweet embraces may extinguish clean those thoughts that do dissuade me from my vow, and keep my oath to Lucifer.

Meph: This or whatever else Fautus may desire shall be performed in a twinkling of an eye. [enter helen passing over the stage between two cupids]

Fautus: Was this the face that launched a thousand ships, and burnt the topless towers of Illium?

(3) Paris: Helen's Lover, the son of Priam, King of Troy, and Hecuba; and through his abduction of Helen, was the cause of the siege of Troy. Before his birth Hecuba was told in a prophecy that she was to bring forth a firebrand, and, this was interpreted to mean that the unborn child would bring forth destruction to his house, the infant Paris was exposed on Mount Ida. He was however brought up by a Shepherd, and grew to perfection of beautiful manhood. When the golden Apple of Discord was thrown upon the of the Gods it was Paris who had to judge between the rival claims of Hera, (Juno), and Aphrodite, (Venus), and Athene (Minerva); each godess offered him bribes- the first POWER, the second the most BEAUTIFUL of WOMEN, and the third MARITAL GLORY. He awarded the apple to the title of ''FAIREST'' to Aphrodite, who in return assisted him to carry off Helen, for whom he deserted his wife.

Art is subjected to definite conditions. Laocoon has a very special place in the very heart of Rome, and every Roman, because the piece sybolises the music, art, poetry, exquisite eloquence, fortifying strength, dexterity, and determination released from the marble block, and is emblematic of the mighty Trojans of Troy, the great ancesters and founders of the Roman Race...;-)

Hang on you can't go around frisking an innocent man like that!...;-) Ha ha ha!!! that tickled!...;-)

However, sylverwyld you tricky tickling little detective, you are still not getting away from the fact that you are in CHECK!...;-) And, I don't need any armies, (very witty), to help me win this debate. Although your man Micky Angelo hadn't a clem about the correct position of Laocoon's right arm. Or had 'Gotthold Ephraim Lessing', when he wrote his superb treatise based around  Laocoon, defining the limits of poetry and plastic arts, published in 1766. I could have argued this point stipulating that your Micky Angelo, plagiarised many details from Laocoon, so in fact all his work, including your 'Statue of David' was inferior. The rightful arm being found and replaced to its rightful position in the fifties, supporting my argument 100%. I could have also argued that Loacoon is the most magnificent Greek masterpiece in existence. The piece exhibits delectable beauty, while displaying the most violent suffering possible, this pain and suffering is depicted in every muscle and sinew of Laocoon's body. If you carefully view the stomach without viewing the face, you can almost experience the pain. However, the pain in the face does not show itself with the same intensity as the body. The misery and pain depicted by the body pierces our hearts, but the face inspires us with a wish that we ourselves could all suffer and endure such pain and misery like the great magnificent Seer Laocoon!...;-) You could argue against my comment again saying your statute of David is more beautiful. CHECK!!

Loacoon is a Trojan, who takes on the whole scenario of Homer's 'ILIAD', and this is depicted within the sculpture. And, Homer is the Master Poet, who all great writers' have developed their characters from. For example Achilles is Superman! Paris is Romeo! While the whole Iliad revolves around the glorious stunning, exquistely gorgeous, magnificently delectable beauty of Helen. Juliet!! CHECK!!

Homer's magnificent heroes all too frequently fall to their death. He's not afraid of killing them off, if you get my drift? Although they are in all their actions beings of a higher order, they are in their feelings truly great men. For instance Achilles slays the most noble, and magnanimous Trojan of them all, the magnificent Hecter. But even more Homer down grades Hecter after his death by having Achilles lash him to his chariot, and dragged the dead body around the walls of Troy three times. Then the invunerable Achilles is slain by Paris the great Lover, who shoots him in the foot with an arrow, (which is his Achilles Heel). Inturn Paris is fatally wounded by a poisoned arrow by Philotetes. While Helen's enlightening beauty shines throughout. CHECK!!

If you wish to develop your characters further you can now reach into this deep, fierce, roaring, blazing central knowledge, that now burns within the creative furnace of your mind. And, develop your own characters. For example blend your knowledge of Mick's statute of David, with your new knowledge of Laocoon, and produce a Hero character with esoteric perception and insight as wide and placid, and, as far seeing as the sun, who will become the upper light of the world. And, always try and make your heroine more beautiful than Helen, and cleverer than Dido, and a greater Seer than Laocoon, and more exquisitely musical than David. CHECK! Blend your characters with your new knowledge!

You have good honest intellectual talent and wit sylverwyld, and you also have a heartfelt instinct and adherence for truth. In real sincerity, as a writer you have no superior. It's the simplicity of your writing that is your strength, which produces a deep earnest element of sunshine, and joyfulness. Pure sunshine and light...;-)

Now for the CHECK MATE MATEY...;-)

A great writer has to be an ingeniously creative Detective, (and you are a very good one, although I am disappointed you didn't come up with answers to those four questions I asked you, but you have now got a new wealth of knowledge at your disposal).

However, great writers also have to be an Explorer, an Astronomer, a Scientist, a Leader, a Politician, a 'Diplomat, a very good Business Woman, a Fighter, who never gives up, a Teacher, a Judge, a Critic, an Artist, an extremely adept debater, and a very very very very good Lawyer.

If you were the latter you would know in an instance that it is very important to read the small print in any contract or debate you enter into....;-)

The small print in the motion of this debate reads 'I THINK LAOCOON IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF HELLENISTIC WORK IN THE WORLD' How long has Mick's statue of David been an Hellenistic piece of work? Therefore, the dice were loaded from the start sweet Juliet, and without fear of contradiction, and within the realms of pure analogical reasoning I can quite confidently inform you without fear of contradiction that your response is not relevant to this particular debate...;-) CHECK MATE!!!

And, that is how you grab someone by the short and curlies, and say CHECK THAT OUT AND GET OUT OF THAT ONE MATEY IF YOU CAN??????????????!!!...;-)

Some delectable little detective told me that they had a problem developing a character. This debate was a stratagem to teach and entrap that person, knowing full well that not many other debaters on FAA would be interested in sculpture, and that certain person couldn't resist commenting that their sculpture of David was better than my Laocoon...;-) So you see the dice were loaded from the start.

Harry Potter books being the pure Drivel that they are, is all the encouragement I ever needed to KNOW beyond any reasonable doubt that no matter how shi*ty any book I might write, I have a fighting chance of making some cents at my books.

Greek mythology is a pack of lies anyway, which everyone knows.
(hence the terminology: "myth", indicating untruths/fables, etc etc).

Always has.......the enjoyment was never sculpted for the men's enjoyment anyway......would not expect you to comprehend something so - foreign - to your proclivities.
