You do not have to go to a priest.
Some just like to unburden themselves or absolution or something.
Tell a friend your troubles is better idea.

They still hold on to some of their root beliefs of being able to get yourself into heaven by your actions, rather than by your faith. Many catholics, however, do it just to feel cleansed and purified, not to gain salvation

Forgiveness of sins is between God Jesus and yourself.... We'll leave it at that, to not encourage more stupid remarks. As far a the catholics are concerned, the Bible says to confess your sins one to another....it doesn't say anything about confessing to a priest. The purpose is so you can know, your not alone in what you've done and see you can still be accepted (if by people for sure by God) As far as the money thing goes, I believe your talking about the "selling of indulgences" again something setup without Biblical justification. This is why so many people hate religions, because people throw in their own stuff, that doesn't belong. The catholics had to eat fish on Fridays, when I was young, A pope a long time ago, had a friend that was a fisherman, that wasn't doing well and the Pope helped him out. This can easily be researched and proven. People putting their stuff in religion isn't the religion's fault.

God is all powerful all knowing all caring and almighty. But for some strange reason he needs our material currency to pay of his loan on his cloud mansion in heaven

It is believed that priests are the connections to god and by talking to a priest you are asking things of god. The priests take advantage of this and charge money to remove sins. As stated previous Crowd control mainly

That's the complete opposite of what Jesus said !!!!! He said that man can forgive the sins of man (think paralysed man who came through roof)

There's more than one kind of forgiveness poshboy, remember the verse that say "forgive and you will be forgiven" 2 frogivenesses. As stricken says 1 so we aren't walking around with anger and guilt and shame, between each other. The other between you and God. So you are 1/2 right

The central element of Catholic theology is mediation, making the church community, and all of its sacraments, an integral part of salvation. In contrast to what Protestants believe, Christ actually implied that confession of sins had to be done orally, and that it should involve a representative of the church. Catholic theologians will point to John 20:21–23, where Jesus told his apostles: "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." This simply means that rather than only confessing your sins in a private prayer to God (which you should do as well), Catholics are required to also confess all mortal sins verbally to a priest. A few more liberal parishes encourage the confession of transgressions to the laity, especially during the Lenten season. During traditional confession--usually referred to a reconciliation--the priest simply confers God's forgiveness of all sins; he does not actually have any power to forgive them himself. As such, the priest acts as a vehicle of God's grace.

Catholic confession also makes good sense. I can tell you from personal experience that confession is not something that most people look forward to, as it can be incredibly uncomfortable, even though the majority of priests are really very kind and not at all judgmental. Since this is not a sacrament that most Catholics enjoy, they probably think twice before committing the same sins over again, just to avoid having to visit the confessional yet again. It can serve as a good deterrent.

Just because you confess to one another doesn't mean you are entitled to forgive one another, to forgive means to judge, and the saying goes, judge not lest ye be judged. Now if someone does wrong to you, that is a private matter between you two, therefore
you have you have to decide whether or not you want to turn the other cheek. If a person confess to a murder to his neighbor,
that won't set him free from the law, nor will it gain him instant
forgiveness by the victims family or the community.

God forgives sins through humans. Since when do you have to pay a priest?

Where in the Bible does it say that? In fact, it says specifically that you just have to PRAY and ask forgiveness, not go see a priest and do pennance.

Admit it, the Catholics are, as is usually the case, extra-Biblical on this.

Catholics are speaking to an anonymous person that is to reflect the representation of Christ. Both parties in a confessional are anonymous to enhance the connection toward Christ (although this anonymity is not necessarily done today).

"Confession is good for the soul". There is something to this. It is helpful to share some of the deepest infractions that we have committed with someone else. It also helps illuminate our defects of character so we can better understand ourselves and get honest with who we are. When done correctly it can bring the person out of his corrupt thinking and he can find greater humility.

How arrogant and absurd are the numerous justifications people put forward to explain the existence (or not) of a God. To believe that humans can even begin to understand any God's intentions is laughable. How can we possibly know if 'God' is a contrived idea, the energy source of the entire Universe, an omnipotent being that looks over our every move or a physical deity that can be harmed? For the faithful that believe in miracles, with what method or mechanism does your God actually use to make things change 'magically'? Wouldn't it take some form of specific interaction to make such a change, rather than just wishful thinking? Some of you may be tempted to answer that question, but that merely proves the point raised at the beginning of this reason about how arrogant people are that they think that they can explain the actions and power of any God.

But this topic goes around and around..people attacking each other and not progressing the topic at all, there are a lot of comments here, but mostly personal opinions and very little fact to substantiate anything. 'Fact' in a topic as complex as this may suffice to be a view shared by a great many people (perhaps such as the followers of a religious book) and is open to challenge by others that have another 'fact' to discredit the thinking of the masses. In many other topics however, fact would be defined as something provable and should provide a relevant source, be it a creditable weblink, or just from qualifications or from experience that is not questioned by the general public, such as an engineer's comments about the strength of a bridge. The point being 'fact' is information that YOU feel is correct or can be trusted and if it survives rigorous debate and a large majority of people end up agreeing, then it is likely true. In all cases though, if you have a valid alternate view to discredit the original perception of fact, you should show your alternate source for others to consider if you want this 'fact' to stand the test of debate. Even the well articulated comments here are still only unsubstantiated opinions. Much of it is repeated over and over and still the topic is no closer to an answer. Comments are drawn out with padding and full of irrelevant phrases such as 'I think...' and 'you haven't answered my question..BLAH BLAH', rather than sticking to consise fact, so if you want a serious place to build on each thought to learn new things and maybe get closer to the truth, rather than just to playing around and trying to score points against each others intelligence without purpose, go to www.thoughtitthrough.com and add to the structured topics to build on our collective knowledge for this topic, as well as many related topics such as 'our purpose' and 'the origins of the Universe'. You will find many other meaningful topics there also, plus you can add your own!
