Diplomacy = Punching people in the gut.
Kirk got it right! The Borg were definitely awesome, but the first Star Trek was just more fun,
while TNG took itself too seriously. |

It'll be obvious the ages of the people who vote here, those who were around for TOS are going to
vote for Kirk, those who weren't born until the TNG era are going to vote Picard. Personally, I
can't stand Star Trek beyond the TOS era, the entire worldview (humans are wonderful and need to
spread their wonderful culture to the stars) is abhorrent to me. The look of the shows beyond TOS
is also nauseating and the less said about Berman and Braga the better. |

I think Sisko was the best captain ever |

Hell no! |

I much prefer Jean Luc because he is played by a brilliant actor. He is authoritative, interactive
and just generally a better captain. |

Not so much no. Jean Luc Picard had a sex-appeal to him, James T. Kirk (William Shatner) was
lacking.
Jean Luc Picard was more intelligent, and intense: A good thing;-)
And resisted the Borg longer than James T. Kirk could have!
The Borg was unable to KEEP HIM assimilated.....hence inner-fortitude at work. He had some
game....;-) |

Please, Number one had more know how and gumpshun than kirk. Kirk was always busy trying to be a
lady's man, that's why some one died on every episode of Kirk Trek.
The only thing that kept that one on the air for so long was Spock and his relationship with kirk.
The other characters are the ones that made the movies hits, not kirk. Kirk is Jerk, kirk is a jerk,
kirk is a jerk! |

More experience? Surely not. Kirk was a younger man, venturing out into the unknown. Picard was able
to draw on a rich history of Starfleet interactions to base his decisions on. Better social skills?
By that you mean he tried to get cuddly with the alien women. This was not really appropriate
behaviour in a captain, who has to remain detached.
The truth is Kirk was a hot-headed, arrogant fool. He got his crew into many unnecessary
predicaments, and probably adversely affected the development of numerous lesser civilisations. He
violated the Prime directive on numerous occasions. Each one of these instances may sound noble in
principle. But history is a learning process. Take away the bad, and you take away the impulse to
improvement. Would we have had the League of Nations without the First World War? The United Nations
without the Second World War? The dark parts of our history incenitivise our progress towards the
light. If we had had an interfering alien fool like Kirk constantly interfering with our historical
development, we would never have made the moral progress we've made.
Besides, with his tight, body-hugging costume, Kirk had to spend most of his mental energy
concentrating on sucking his belly in so it didn't look too big. That left not much spare capacity
for making good command decisions.
It's impossible to separate Kirk from Shatner. Shatner's arrogance was Kirk's arrogance. Shatner was
intensely disliked by most of the Star Trek cast and crew and only learned humility after being
kidnapped by aliens. |
