With the way the world is going these days, there doesn't seem to be a lot of support for things
from the past and for them to continue on. Not just films, but also landmarks, ways of doing things,
ways of living, etc. Obviously not "major" landmarks, but you always hear about communities having
to rally together to try and save their "local landmark" from big corporates coming in wanting to
put a shopping mall the size of Texas on it (for a town of 200 people).
I think in this case, with James Bond, it's just another step in that direction. It's inevitable
that things change and evolve, and even though 007 has to a certain extent, it's probably about time
they started looking to the future and basing a character on a more modern style. I mean really,
James Bond was cool and suave back in the day, but that's when the stuff he was doing was actually
cool. Now its sort of like, when your Dad tries to bust out the latest moves on the dance floor at
your cousins 21st party - it just doesn't look or feel right. James Bond these days seems forced and
his "air of coolness" has gone stale.
I have heard a lot of people talk about Jason Bourne being the "new age James Bond". I think he is
in a way, but I still don't think it has the sort of story line that you could keep going on with
forever (which is why I guess they did a trilogy).
If I had to come up with the character, it would be someone more technologically advanced - a geek
if you will. Someone that is "onto it" in every way, instead of being the "cliche cool", they would
be more unorthodox in the way they do things, but they would always know what they were doing. Even
though it's old, I would tend to use "MacGyver" as a basis. That dude was awesome and if they made a
more modern version of him, I would watch it to no end. |

James Bond is a relic left over from the cold war. The ‘super’ agent, essentially a super hero
with no real super powers is a ridiculous idea. The time has come to end the Bond franchise, it’s
just no longer necessary, we’ve seen it all before and changing the actor really doesn’t make it
a fresh idea.
The development of the character has never really occurred. Occasionally his current woman is
killed and I believe that his wife is killed in one of the series, but
Let’s not forget that he’s been around now for such a long time, he should have retired and yet
by refreshing the actor, he goes on and on. It’s sure time for Bond to give up his double ‘O’
status and become a piece of history.
The books were a remarkable reflection of the time, when Britain and America were fighting the
apparently cold and evil forces of the Soviets. Russia may no longer be a close ally, but we’re
far from becoming the deadly enemies that we once were. However, I imagine that the next adventure
will somehow tackle Middle Eastern terrorists and their connection to Russian nuclear power. The
stories become a reflection of contemporary society, if you like a reflection of our own fears. But
do we need our fears reflected any more and do we need ‘a hero’ when thousands are dying for
real out in Iraq and Afghanistan, does that not bring home the dark fallacy of the fictitious Bond
nonsense?
What’s more, the character seems to promote violence, all of his encounters somehow end in
violence, his co-stars are murdered, baddies, extras, all it seems often to be about the body count
and whilst that’s not anywhere near the same level as say a play by William Shakespeare, it is
rather less literary in value than a work by Shakespeare.
His female counterparts are also killed or never appear again. This is a plot device, not allowing
them to ever be developed and carried over into the next in the series. This promotes promiscuity
and the idea of women are temporary sex objects and detached them from human relationships.
I appreciate that Bond has gotten a little less promiscuous in recent adventures. Nonetheless, the
others are still shown with such frequency that the legend simply continues. The old Bond and the
new Bond become one in our collective consciousness - regardless of who is playing Bond in this or
that particular adventure.
Would you agree, it’s time to put this relic of the cold war back in his box? Shouldn’t we
attempt to decrease our connection to violence, so that we become less inured to it? I feel that we
are being desensitized to the violence, without ever seeing the consequences of the acts of
violence. His treatment of women does not reflect contemporary society or at least the goals of a
contemporary society, and therefore, he should shoot down Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for good. |

I am against this debate for the following reasons:
1. Sean Connery, the actor, was a sexpot, always.
He played the James Bond character, to a T. HOT, HOT, HOT.
Who can forget his pronunciation of the Ms. Galore line? ;-0
2. Daniel Craig, the latest James Bond incarnation, is HOT.
It is his offbeat sort of good-looks, those blue eyes of his
would melt solid rock!
And his tight @ss......he is delicious.
But he can really ACT: Which is really what his job is all about.
He won his role as the new James Bond on MERIT.
No one but Daniel Craig earned his role, and he kicks @SS.
VICIOUS and DELICIOUS Daniel Craig new James Bond. |

It seems to be a character that people still like. I sure am glad the entire world is not yet run by
politically correct twits that would rather ban other people from saying things that upset them than
doing something good to support these things they supposedly care about. |

Waow.
I think that James Bond is the least of our problems these days.
Honestly.
You think that a "super spy" is going to influence anyone so want to have sex or beat people up?
What about just about Everything else that it out there.
I think that the daily news is worse than James Bond.
Again: Wow! |

Whoever said Bond was supposed to be a role model? Bond is a classic character who just got an
"update" with the awesome "Casino Royale"....perhaps you should just look elsewhere for your
entertainment. |

How dare you !!!!!
James bond is a mark of all that britons are and should strive to be. To fight for king and country,
to take on the world and to do so with a stiff upper lip and in a suave and composed way.
What should we have instead ? A working class, ethnic, politically correct green peace campaigner ?
I THINK NOT !!!!!!!!! |

Bond is by no means outdated! The new films have breathed fresh air into the character and made him
more realistic and likable to the audience. As for advocating promiscuity and gore, British cinema
is all the better for it. |

I agree that it Promotes promiscuity and glorifies violence, but it isn't outdated and it is still
one of the coolest movie series ever. |

I don't think Bond was ever intended to be a role model, he's an action hero (albeit a very tame one
by modern standards) and a ridiculously sexually overactive one at that. He's supposed to be suave
and debonair, but I've always found him obnoxious. |

You'll find that there are very few good role models in TV/Film nowadays. I think it would be a
better idea to scrap Rappers who glorify Crime. Scrap size 0 celebs who encourage eating disorders
etc. Out of all of them, i think James bond is one of the least offensive - at least he's good
mannered and not mindlessly violent. |

James Bond series is not an obsolete and outdated thing in today’s world. If we consider its
popularity we must not write in favor of this topic. Till date the accessibility of this screening
hero into the heart of millions of people is still like what it used to be at the very starting days
of this hero. According to my view, the popularity of James Bond is still increasing day by day.
This thriller series is so popular that its demand in context to the youth world can not be denied
in any way. Any fiction of this famous British detective does not promote promiscuity and violence
as his movies contain the complete thrilling experiences throughout the years. Although his movies
contain some adult scenes but the youth generation is quite aware of this fact and they make their
screening hero to be counted as a real hero. |

James Bond is no different from any other action hero. Look at movies like "Gladiator," "Star Wars,"
and "The Transporter." All of those were hit movies, and they had violence; but at the same time,
they also had substance and a plot that made the viewer sympathize with the character(s). James Bond
is just another in a long line of fine characters. If you eliminate him because of the violence his
character portrays, then you might as well eliminate the majority of the movie-making industry,
because a large portion of it deals with sex and action and violence. See how the general public
deals with that. |
