Jack Cafferty is absolutely plain awful as a CNN commentator and always has been. He has a very
arrogant and surly style, that usually makes me cringe whenever I see him on television. His
comments about the Chinese were also beyond the pale. There is nothing wrong with criticizing the
Chinese government or state authorities for their negligence when it comes to safety and health
standards. We all know that there is plenty that we could criticize China for, although I would
place human rights abuses at the top of my list, and not toys that contained lead paint. The problem
with Cafferty's remarks is that it is possible to interpret them as referring to the Chinese people
in a more general sense. To call them "goons and thugs" is unacceptable and pointless hyperbole.
I don't understand why Americans so fancy their "straight talk" television commentators, who only
seem able to stay on the air through dubious shock and awe tactics. Although I would not force
Cafferty to apologize for his remarks, I do think that CNN should consider firing him. |

What he said about tainted imports from China was true. There have been many quality control and
safety issues with Chinese products.
What he said about "goons and thugs", I think is clear from the context, only applied to the Chinese
government, not the Chinese people, so I'd say it was fair political comment. People should be
allowed to express frank opinions about politicians even in harsh terms. |
