It's A Waste Of Money To Buy Something That Is Purely Ornamental
Everything I have ever bought is useful; Whether it be a computer, TV, shelf, DVD/VHS, book or anything else. The only decorative things I own were gifts. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't like things which are esthetically appealing, I just wouldn't purchase an item solely for that reason. I find it distasteful when the rich spend astronomical amounts of money on things which are just for display, including pieces of art.

I see everything has a use. And ornaments have use. Even for aesthetics and atmospheric comfort which is the difference between an angry person walking in the room and a happy person walking in the room. Even purposeless ornaments have purposes. Like art. The message is just... Subtle. I can say something but how I say it determines tone which is like 60-70% communicated language we subconsciously pick up.

Art has a psychological factor and no one else will ever think exactly like you do. I do appreciate that you want a desired use for things than to just look pretty. I used to think like that. But when I realized that humans needed feelings, touch, and passion to assist with our cold mechanical logic, I changed what I believed.

Hahaha I went philosophical and transcendental with your concept.

I get your point but I'd say there are some places so sorely in need of ornamentation that it is justified. If you're in solitary confinement in prison, or live in a cave, or in a steel capsule hurtling through empty outer space, then I'd be quite happy to have something to look at. And you may notice that sometimes the people who go most overboard with decoration of their houses are the same people who live in a boring place in a boring town. They respond to the lame outside by putting interest inside.

I agree with your last sentence in your debate description, but disagree that something that is purely ornamental is a waste of money. There are things that are aesthetically pleasing that do not cost a great deal of money or the supplies with which one may create them do not cost much money. If something brings someone joy, comfort of adds something interesting to a room they are trying to decorate, it may not be a waste of money to that person. While you may like to purchase useful things, there are people who believe cell phones or computers are a waste of money because they are not useful to them. What good is buying a book for someone who hates to read? They may prefer to take that money and buy a decorative piece of art (cost does not have to be excessive here) instead. If that makes them feel good, then it was not a waste of their money.

Going back to your last sentence, if I were wealthy, I would feel the need to donate some money to either a charitable organization or to a family in need (or families...depending on how much money we're talking about). Not all people feel the same way and, while we may not understand why some people can spend small fortunes on things that we think could have been better spent or donated to the needy, I avoid judging others in general. I may believe that behavior is selfish, but not knowing what is in a person's head/heart, I don't feel that I can judge them for what they find brings joy to their lives. Maybe they lived a difficult life and came from a very poor background and want to "spoil" themselves. To me, it would seem they would especially understand the feeling of want and need, but again, without knowing someone and what kind of person they are, I cannot say they are wasting their money even if, for me it would be a waste of money. Also, who's to say that, aside from those purchases, they are not giving a great deal of time or money to those who are in need? You know how you would personally feel in that situation and I agree that I would feel selfish too, but I can't agree that everyone should feel selfish. Hope that makes sense. Having a busy morning and liked the debate topic, so I wanted to post a response. : )
