It Would Show More Strength For Gordon Brown To Admit He Was Wrong Over Scrapping The 10p Tax Bracket And Reverse The Decision.
The media seem to slate politicians if they admit they made a mistake and change their mind. They are accused of flip-flopping as though this is the biggest crime they could ever commit. Surely if they make a mistake the worst thing they could do is stubbornly stand by it just to avoid saying they got it wrong.
It was wrong. Labour profess to be the champions of those on low incomes. They have enacted a number
of pieces of legislation to assist but the scrapping of the 10p tax band undid all that good word
and gave an own goal to the Tories.
More Town Halls are now under Labour control because of this piece of legislation. It will take
Labour a long time to recover lost ground (possibly, but I hope not, two or more General Election
defeats).
It was a terrible error for a labour government to introduce a change that stung those on a lower
income. Brown has been hammered in the polls, and this was a major factor. How he could make such
a blunder amazes me but now he knows it was wrong surely the sign of a strong leader is to have the
courage to admit it and change it back.
