Yeah I think it is racist but only between very very short people made out of plastic. |

I think we should lighten up a bit, I take the post as a touch humorous, and frankly it does make
you think. Why did the white pieces end up going first?
To which let me add 1) Many chess sets have other shapes and colors than traditional so you may not
even have white or black on the table, 2) It's a contest of two players, if both players agree as a
nice symbolic gesture for the black to go first this time then it's up to them and no one can stop
them, 3) In all the games I've played with family and friends it's most common for one player to
offer for the other to go first regardless of which color they are. It just doesn't really matter
what the original rule says if the two players can work it out fairly. 4) The game is a mental
contest. What sort of mental giants are we if we get hung up over which color can start? Sounds
like someone should be playing tick tack toe instead. |

I agree with ur_wrong. People can make anything sound racist. |

Chess didn't originate in a society where white/black racism was an issue. They probably just picked
a color randomly.
People can make anything sound racist. |

The idea that it is racist, is racist. |

If it were black pieces going first, I wouldn't directly link it up to the colour of my skin and
find it offensive. |

So people are gonna sit down to play a game and then discover that they don't want to go first
because it might be taken offensively and therefore the whole game is spent arguing who is to go
first. And i agree wid charlie( what's it) someone has to go first. Its only a loour at the end of
the day i agree with verum and also monique |

One colours got to go first, and if it was Blacks go first I wouldn't be offended.
Though I agree with Grenache, lighten up a bit people. There's no need to take it so seriously. |

Well why don't we make them all the same colour or color for the yanks then. |

What an utterly idiotic statement.
White/black racism does not predate the 17th century CE when slavery began. The only racism that
historically predates that is christian Europe's attitudes toward jews and muslims through the Dark
Ages (which certainly explains the crusader's acts of cannibalism on their conquered
enemies). The ancient Greeks and Romans saw Ethiopians and other Africans as their equals, as
well as traders from the far east, India and China, along the Silk Road.
Chess in its modern form dates back to the 11th century, and its origins to the 6th century. And
since the names for pieces came from the feudal era, it requires incredible ignorance to wonder why
kings, queens, bishops, knights, knaves and vassals are the names of pieces.
One would wonder why you're not talking of playing cards as well. It wouldn't surprise to hear you
don't know the standard pack's origins in Tarot cards. |

It is a rule like Miss Scarlet goes first in Cluedo! It is to stop disagreements! |
| |
|

While it is possible that there is some cultural input in which side goes first, playing chess that
way does not indicate any racist tendencies of the players. One only follows that rule because it
helps to indicate who should go first. I know that I play that rule and I have no negative feelings
to members of other races. |

Do not compare objects to "races" of people, it doesn't make sense to do so, especially in this
manner. And when I say races, i mean the slang word that has no real meaning, for there is merely
one race within the human species. |
