Yes, some times there is NO need for celebrating, but on big occasions, why not?

I think it is a bit pointless christmas should be the real celebration to be honest its better for
people of all ages. Most people just see new year as a time of going out and getting drunk which i
can do anytime anyway. I don't have any problems with people who do celebrate good for them i just
can't see the reason to celebrate. |

I agree. It is pointless to celebrate the New Year. To begin, most people just finished celebrating
Christmas a week earlier. After Christmas, it is time to settle down and get back to normal life.
Second, I believe that every day is a new day and that is reason to celebrate. It is pointless to
celebrate one day out of the year. People should wake up every morning and be thankful they are
alive. Every day is a new day, with new possibilities, new adventures, and new things to see and do.
So, to me News Years Day is another day and I celebrate it as I celebrate every other day of my
life.
I do think that it is pointless to go out and get drunk on New Year's Eve. What is the point? It not
only is a stupid way to celebrate something (by hurting yourself), it also shows a great lack of
responsibility. It is okay to have a drink on New Years, but I do not think it is a good idea to get
drunk. New Years is nothing to harm yourself or possibly others over.
I don't celebrate New Years any different than I celebrate every day of my life. I am not grumpy. As
the matter of fact, I am very happy in my life and I do not regret not partying and celebrating New
Years Day. Above all, people waste too much money on celebrating New Years. On January 2, it must be
terrible to wake up and see how money you don’t have because you spent it all on the New Years
party.
So, I do not celebrate New Years. It is pointless to go out and party and lose hard earned money for
a few hours of fun. |

Yes, its like celebrating another thousand on your cars odometer.
If there is anything you want to change in your life do it now - today - immediately - no need to
wait until the new year |

I love New Years'. It's a nice thing to celebrate; it's a new year. Maybe it isn't philosophically
important, but neither are birthdays! Stop being such a grump. |

Man has an inate desire to party. We look for reasons to celebrate. After all we are only
celebrating being alive and sharing that joy with others |

I think it is a good thing.
You can draw a line and leave the past behind, have a couple of drinks make some new years
resolutions you try and stick to.Cheers! |

I think this day can have some significance, but not much. I don't see why people celebrate their
birthdays. It's just the start of another 365-day journey around the sun. |

It would only be pointless to celebrate something if you could refute awareness of it... The
changing of the year is what it is... You don't have to get drunk... That doesn't mean you don't
have X feeling when it happens... Unless your a coarse person who gets more of a dumpling-push from
telling us partying is pointless and associating that with such a romantic exhilaration as new year,
but emphatically needs to let us know the err of our idiocy... Thanks |

Though if we think that New Year eve is just another day like the days we have in a year but still
there is something special with this day. This day marks the beginning of another year and
definitely it is a special day and we must celebrate this day. With this day we leave our previous
year back and step into another year with many resolutions and hopes and wishes. Thus it is a very
vital and exceptional day which denotes the end of something and the beginning of something. We must
celebrate the year coming ahead of us, and this occasion remains to be very special because this is
such a unique occasion which comes once in a year. Thus the New Year is a very enjoyable occasion
which gives lot of merriment to all the people throughout the world. |

Since I enjoy celebrating the New Year, it is not pointless. It makes me happy, and that's the
point. I wish it made everyone happy, that's why I say "Happy New Year!" to people. It's my way of
hoping that it makes you happy also. |

Having Scottish ancestry I have to say that Hogmanay / New Year is an important social and
traditional event in Scotland at least. The celebration of the 'new' year has it's roots in the
social and economic life of our early ancestors.
The transition from the winter to the spring and summer was part of the cycle of life and important
for agriculture and animal husbandry. The mysterious 'other world' of our ancestors lived side by
side with everyday life and was a cause for fear as well as celebration.
In today's world, especially in the so called advanced societies we have moved away from the real
reasons for many of our traditions which have been lost as we move from economies based mainly on
agriculture and rural life.
I think if we gave more thought to what we celebrate we could start to understand and appreciate
what we are supposed to be celebrating especially with so much focus now on environmental issues.
In Scotland New Year has traditionally been a semi- pagan and important festival whilst in the rest
of the British Isles it has been eclipsed by Christmas which seems to have also lost some of it's
former glory due to commercialisation.
Perhaps we need to revive old festivals in the spirit that they were meant - as social, family and
community events which bound people together with a common thread? |

A wise man once told me... "law by which a thing comes into existence determines it's nature". He
used it to describe how human life can be swayed just by the adherence or the lack there of
adherence to natural law.
It is the same with begin what is called a new year. We gave successfully made another trip around
the sun. We have been allowed to start a new year. To do what? Usually to repeat the same madness
or the increase in uncivilized conduct yet another year. Returning to my opening quote... Starting
ring in the new year in an uncivilized, foolish way, full of folly, murder, lies, drunken and silly
behavior is only the law that determines the "new" or same old year. Not to lump all human being in
the same bag. Of course their are those who sincerely make efforts to grow and improve themselves
mentally and spiritual, but on a mass scale... Most people are only concerned about material
improvement and other shallow improvements.
Starting the year off in foolishness and not considering the blessing and seriousness of life is a
new year off to a bad start.
What is new years day? What is the true history of such a day? What does it mean? Just because we
get all dressed up and pretend to be doing something important, does not change it's root and
original purpose. Since the calendar had changed so much in history, is this really the "new year"?
Why do people wait all year long to determine that they now must resolve to change on this day?
This is commercialized foolishness, only used to make up for a year worth of financial losses
through the selling of food, parties, liquor and many other things.
Your new year can be when your are ready to really make a change. Change only occurs when a new
idea is introduced into the mind and an old one is put to rest. |

I think its great to celebrate New Year (or Hogmanay)!!
It is the marker to send out the old year and welcome in the New Year. Regardless of whether you've
had a terrible year or a great year it is a god way to celebrate its end and look forward to better
things.
Its also one of the times of year where everyone seems united. Whether you are just with family, at
a small gathering or at a huge party in a city like Glasgow or New York City everyone is united by
the excitement. For one or two moments everyone forgets that they are different, hug, kiss and offer
good wishes and a Happy New Year. What could be nicer?
It was tradition in my house to open the front door to let the new year in and open the back door to
let the old year out after the stroke of midnight. Sure it may be a little silly but it really
marked a fresh start.
In many countries you also have 'first footing'. In Scotland its especially lucky for a tall dark
man to be the first to cross your door in the New Year, but really any friend will do - as long as
they bear gifts. Traditionally you would bring coal, salt and whisky. I prefer to take whisky, a
candle and some party food. Its more practical these days!
I don't think there is anything wrong in celebrating it. Yes it is 'just another day' but by making
it something special you can really set yourself on a positive path.
People who don't celebrate are generally grumps anyway! You don't have to go out and get trollied,
but just sit at home with your loved ones and watch Big Ben strike away. Its not about brooding over
what you haven't achieved but celebrating what you have and focusing on even better things! |
