I recently drove past a home near mine and there were two flags. While I was happy to see the American proudly displayed, I was offended to see the Confederate flag flying next to it upset me. I understand it is a piece of our history and that the owner of the home was within their rights to hang that flag, but that person could have chosen to hang the flag on a wall inside of their home where they would not offend others. I'm not suggesting that anyone's right to display it should be taken from them.

Definitely offensive. Too bad. It's a cool looking flag. I don't think it's offensive because of the civil war, I think it's because of the way it was used after the civil war.

It is a fact that African-Americans in general as well as quite a few from other ethnic groups are offended by the Confederate flag so regardless of the debate on history or rights the statement of the debate topic is true - it is indeed offensive to fly that flag.

Probably the only exceptions I can think of are 1) if the home is a remote rural area where really no one else will see it anyway, 2) if it's displayed indoors, or 3) if the building is a historic site (museum, civil war era structure, etc) in which case history is history and appropriate.

But for the typical redneck to display the Confederate flag I'd say not only yes is it offensive but the displayer is deliberately and obtrusively trying to be offensive.

I'm at a loss as to where to begin.  This debate is not about whether that home owner has a right to hang that flag.  He/she does have that right and I don't want to see anyone's rights taken from them.  I was offended and I was also offended for others who will see it and take offense.  I'm white and it bothered me.  I cannot imagine how much more it might hurt those who are African Americans.

I do feel that we shouldn't have to bend over backwards when it comes to any race.  We should all be equal, but to display something that one knows is offensive demonstrates a lack of consideration.  This is not meant to be about rights.  It is meant to be about consideration, compassion and empathy.

Lastly, while I used this as a learning experience for my children, I have to wonder how many other children see that flag and do not realize what it is or how it might offend others.  My hope is that the next generation will be less racist and more eager to see all people as their equals.  This is true not only of one race, but of differing lifestyles and differing religious beliefs.  I don't want them to judge others.  I use a lot of examples to teach them about things such as slavery, the Holocaust and those who have a different sexual orientation.  I sincerely hope that most other parents are instilling the same tolerance in their children.

This is the only country where the celebration of the group who lost in a war is allowed. Germany doesn't allow people to fly the Nazi Flag. I know of no other country where this is allowed to happen so proudly. One reason why this country is not considered the greatest in the world.

Moreno, thanks for responding. I said the same thing to my kids that you just wrote regarding the Nazi Flag. They weren't tickled with the History lesson or the moral lesson (as you know, I can be wordy), but when I see something like that, I use it as a learning experience. It's the only way I can use it as something positive and refrain from parking the car and removing the flag. That's how angry I was.

Good thing you respect free speech. That's the main Jist. You cannot know why he hung it either. The US flag. Is it amazing because of thomas jefferson and george washington? Or is it amazing because our "war on terror" and our "freedom" that supposedly still exists today?

Whatever happened to freedom of expression? I get the same hassle for the swastika I fly from my house. Granted, its in the Jewish quarter.. Maybe I need to move to a more liberal area..
Should have learned my lesson from my Red hand of Ulster and my Tri colour.... What flag can I fly without being abused? A white one?

2free....I know you were joking, but I just wanted to reassure you that I did not intend to insinuate that the home owner should not have the right to hang any flag he or she wishes to hang.  My only point was that it is offensive.  It may not offend all people, but it does offend some.

Gott.....I am not judging the person who is hanging the flag.  I do not know their intent.  I didn't go up to their door and tell them off.  I only stated that hanging that flag is offensive.  As I stated, it may not offend all people, but it offended me and will offend others.  I agree that some people will ridicule you for being Christian and believing in God, but that is much different.  Your beliefs are not meant to upset anyone nor are they meant to make anyone feel like you are supporting something that puts others down....at least I haven't seen you use God to make others feel guilt, shame, sorrow or humiliation.

It is not discrimination to be offended by a flag.  I do not hate the person who is flying that flag.  I am simply offended that they feel that it is ok to display it in an area where it is going to upset and offend others, but it is their right and I do not wish to see any rights taken away from anyone.  I would hope that you know that about me by now.

The confederate flag was a symbol of the south who wanted to become a separate country right?
NOw while I agree, that slavery was wrong, what I don't understand is why didn't Abraham Lincoln let them secede?(Probably misspelled)

In all seriousness though, If someone wants to say that they believe that the south should've split from America who are we to stop him?
He might be flying the flag to honour someone in his family who died (Admittedly defending something that wasn't really the best thing to defend)

It would have been better if the Union had split. And we would watch the south economy rot away. You have to remember the south was economically poor and struggling to survive. Free labor kept things in balance.

For years, the north and the south had been trying to come up with a solution to the problem. Deals had been struck. Legislation passed.

The only way the south was going to be able to abolish slavery was for the north to pay for it. The citizens in the north would have faced severe taxation to fund the transition. There were obviously major problems with this. While people talk of the north being rich compared to the south, it’s not as if everyone in the north owned industries. The people were not rich.

The south screwed up. Same as throughout history, some of its leaders made a serious miscalculation. They thought that if the south showed they were willing to fight, the “rich” people in the north would not have the stomach for war. This has been a common mistake made throughout history. You never want to think that people aren’t going to fight once their people start dieing. They tend to get pissed off. The leaders in the south thought the north would let them secede once the war started. Bad move.

I don't understand this debate. Are you debating that it is an offesive symbol? If so, then it is not really a debate. Most people find it offensive. It does not seem you are debating the right to fly the flag because you say the home owner was within their rights. I am voting on both sides. I am against taking away the right to fly it.

I am also against taking away their rights, Artemis. I just find it highly offensive and insensitive to others. I know that African Americans are highly offended by this flag and feel that, if we are going to peacefully coexist, we need to find ways to demonstrate more sensitivity and a less blatant show of a lack or concern for others feelings.

Not exactly because of slavery, but because it is hurtful and offensive to people. Regardless of whether the North had slaves, and I'm fully aware of that, the Confederate Flag is still offensive.
