Writing Is Really An Art Form
I think, as a wordsmith/writer myself, we qualify as artists. We use our creative capacity for words, not sculptures and paintings. We put just as much work (those of us that try, at least.) into a story or poem as a painter or sculptor puts into their piece. Sure, it may not be "Hey, lets frame up this picture/painting and sell it!" or "Lets sell this statue!" like it is with picture/paintings and sculptures...So does it qualify as art?

I used to think writing was just writing, but now I realize it's much more than that. I would say that writing isn't so much an art form as it is a skill, something you must work hard at to be better at. You have to think of characters, plot, setting, symbolism, irony, tone...just a whole bunch of stuff. I also think you won't be much good at it unless you practice a lot.

It certainly can be. Writing itself is a skill, but then so is painting or sculpting, but through the creative process it may be elevated to an art form, like nearly any other skill. As for whether any particular example qualifies; it is as they say in the eyes of the beholder.

SO TOTALLY.

Yes.

Writers, are the best and last line of defense in the battle of the human race against tyranny, oppression, and prejudice, as well as simple Ignorance.

To quote that great writer, Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens):

"The pen, is mightier than the sword".

Amen.

"I hail thee, Quill: And let the bodies of Hate, and Ignorance, be by thy craft vanquished!"

I agree that it is an art form. I would even go so far as to say it is one of the highest art forms.

Sure, anyone can throw paint on a cavas and it's art, but it takes great skill to write something great that people will enjoy.

Writing is definitely a form of art, because you are expressing your thoughts and feelings onto a page (or whatever you are writing on).

I would say it qualifies as an art form, but what "art" is is debated. But yes, a good poem or story evokes as much emotion and thought as Klimpt or Michael Angelo. I've tried writing a few things and find I lack the discipline at the moment, and like art it requires immense attention and a sufficient part of the creator to be successful. Writing is definitely an art form.

In writing, you have to paint a word-picture for the reader.
In writing, your canvass is the paper, and your paint is your words.
It is most definitely an art.

I am an Art dealer (paintings) and Art encompasses all. Art is merely an expression of some sort and writing is an expression therefor is a form of Art.

Why do people make debate titles or statements that are not always answered with a "for" or "against." Not all writing is art but much of it is. I think there are people who write something because they have to (like in school) and do not care about what they are writing, and put words together in an unartistic way and turn it in. Such writing I do not consider art. But the putting of words together in other cases is art. It has to be artistic to a certain degree, I think, to qualify as art. Is a list of groceries to buy artistic? Probably not.

Art can be in any form, even writing. With writing you can let your mind go anywhere u want. U paint pictures inside your head. Paintings were inspired by something, probably something a person has read or has seen. Writing can be portrayed in acting, as well as operas or poetry. Writing allows you to express your self and it constitutes your personality. Writing is most definitely art, weather you accept it or not.

Writers express their art in word form. There is no limitations as to what art can be. We see art everyday around us, and most of that is writing.

Just because writers don't use paint or crayon, doesn't mean we don't express art. Writers express their art by their words. Words are power. I would know this because I am an author.

Of course writing is an art! As a writer myself, I believe that it is one of the finest. The ability to articulate one's words so that they form together and create a fantastic story or convincing argument is quite a talent.

Also, take into consideration caligraphy - writing that is penned artistically. Islamic law dictates that portraits are not to be painted of people, because only Allah can create. Instead, they make masterful works of Arabic caligraphy in the shape of people and other scenes. Even the words composing the scene are beautiful; it is often poetry or words of the Quran.

Also, if rhetoric can be an art, then so can writing.

Yes, writing is an art form. It provokes thoughts and feelings, much like a painting would do. It is something that should be appreciated and it expresses emotion.

I agree that writers put just as much work into their writing as a painter does with a painting. You can feel more emotion with a piece of writing than you can with a painting. It is definitely an art form.

Art is without a doubt an art form- it has to be crafted and can cause changes of emotions in people's feelings, just as paintings and other art forms can.

Yes the writing process paints a scene in your minds eye just like art but, unlike art it gives you scents and feeling it takes you on a emotional roller coaster.

Well to start of with my opinion I would rather say that had writing not been an art form, any person would have become a writer around. Writing is one such an act which brings out all the emotions and sentiments that have been stored in somebody’s mind or soul may be. It is not that every time a person will be able to take up a painting brush and will start making all such images in a canvas with his or her artistic ability. Sometimes people take up a pen and start scripting about all such things that is going on in his or her mind, they put all their creative abilities in those texts which takes the form of a poem or a story. Thus we can say that it is a proven fact that writing is definitely an art form.

To write is to relate on to paper the dreams and aspirations of the soul.
To write is paining a picture as clear as if it were paint on a canvas.
Its is truly an art form more people need to indulge in.
With out these types of artists our favorite novels, movies, poems and songs would be non-existent.

Art is a medium of expression. Hence, anything that enables us to express or put forward our emotions for others to know can be counted as art. Good writing, speaking or singing etc are all forms of art just like painting and sketching.

Poetry and prose have been a part of our syllabus at schools for a long time now and one can not resist appreciating the way in which words are combined to form meaningful sentences that are fulfilling to read. It is like each and every word has been carefully picked out to express the beautiful inner most thoughts of the writer or poet. Whether it sells or not every good and expressive piece of writing that you produce counts as an art piece.

I'm pretty sure it's been defined as an art form for a very long time now. Art isn't defined by how well it sells, it's defined by it's purpose of being beautiful.

As a successful writer, I'm more inclined to say that "writing" is more of a skill than an art. It can be taught, cultivated, practiced, and improved. Writing originally and primarily serves utilitarian purposes in journalism, technical writing, and other "non-artistic" fields. Artistic writing, like fiction and poetry, clearly falls within "the arts" but I would call the basic act of writing a skill that can be turned to artistic purposes, or not.

If you want to play at semantics, any endeavor can be called an art: Plumbing, bricklaying, driving, etc.

As an artist involved in painting, drawing, sculpting, writing, and more than anything music, I know that all art forms have a base in some sort of skill. One can be taught how to paint a brilliant picture or play a complex symphony just as one can be taught how to write an essay. It is when one takes these skills and produces something that holds meaning to them that it becomes an art form. One does not become an artist by painting something that s/he sees, but by painting something that reflects an emotion or a story etc... So just like every skill that is generalized as an art form, writing is something that becomes an art depending on what it is you do with it. I am not a musician for playing music but for composing it. As long as you put meaning into a creation it is art. That is my opinion at least.

I really don't think your writing is an art form.

-There are people who write and it is an art form. I do believe poetry is considered art; however, this individual has no art in their writing. If someone else (someone intelligent) left this post I would vote for it. Had they had proof they had writing that was "art" like."

-There was that better? Lol
