In my opinion it’s less of the Earth needing some help as it is us helping ourselves. The Earth
has gone through many climate cycles and life always survives (though sometimes barely) and returns
to thrive. But for the last 10,000 years or so we have been living in a perfect little window of
climate that is like a long spring. It has been very conducive to agriculture and the expansion of
the human species. But our industrial efforts of the last 250 years are tipping the balance towards
the next stage in the climate cycle. From here on out things start getting less convenient for the
human race, loss of farmable land and potable water being two of the larger effects. That coupled
with increasing population levels adds up to serious problems. Maybe agricultural sciences, disease
control, and international politics will advance fast enough to deal with the escalating problems
that will arise but I find myself dubious as to that likelihood. Any how there is little doubt among
the scientific community that what ever we can do now will help delay and reduce the effects and
repercussions later. |
