Religion Is A Good Thing
Is religion of any kind a positive thing in our modern society or is it a bane? Should religion still hold a position of authority with the power to affect our lives?

Yes, It is. It gives people something to live for. It's not the only thing that does, but still. Also, having a religion stops you from committing murder or lying or cheating on your wife. People need a deeper guidance than law to help them do the right thing in life.

You are clearly wrong. Are you saying that if a person is an atheist then they are likely to commit murder or be adulterous? Clearly this is not the case. Don't just take my word on it, there have been a number of surveys carried out over the years that instances of crime, adulterous behaviour and a myriad of other 'unchristian' behaviours are more prevalent amongst the religious than amongst the non-religious.

the reason I do not murder or cheat is because i know that they are wrong, because i am a decent human being. If you do not murder and cheat simply because you are afraid of the consequences and the judgement of a supreme power, well then i pity you frankly.

For the most part it is good. We don't see all the good that it does in the lives of average people.

If you look at what atheism has achieved you can look at Fascism, Nazism, Communism, Socialism. Look at STalin, Hitler, Ho Chi Min, Mao Tse Tung, countless other genocidal dictators.

Fascism, Communism, socialism etc. are not Atheist movements. They are political/social ideals and are not influenced by religion or lack of religion.

Religion is good for some and not so good for others. I think we need to remember that there is a separation between Church and State. No one religion holds power over another or over others in the United States. People are given the freedom to choose any side or practice any belief they wish as long as it is within the boundaries of our laws. Religion itself is not to blame for many of our problems in the world. People are to blame. Radical Islam for example wishes to wipe out all Christians and Jews and anyone else who does not believe in their religion. I strongly feel that too many people blame religion for too many problems. Power is the issue here. Wars over land, oil, technology and political ideologies cause more problems, in my opinion, than religion. We all have the right and freedom to believe in whatever we want to believe in, that is the beauty of living in America. If I choose to be a Christian, that is my right. I would never look down upon someone or start a fight with someone for disagreeing. Religion has taught me to take responsibility for my actions and to place blame on myself when I have wronged others. Just because religious people mess up, it doesn't mean that they do it because they feel the devil is tempting them. There is temptation for all walks of life. Whether or not you give into that temptation is a sign of how strong your morals are, and how strong your will power and mind is. There have been many religious wars in our history, but the blame is to be put on the people behind the religion, not the religion itself. I guess I am kind of in the middle on this debate because there are so many people that think that their way is the only way and that if you believe in something, then there is always an opposition out there to attack you with their beliefs. Who really knows the truth? Religion? Science? You or me? I think we should stop placing blame and start working on accepting our differences.

Religion can be very positive, or it can be very bad. If your religion leads you to honor your Gods without forcing your practices on others, if it allows and even encourages you to learn and to keep your eyes and your mind open, if it leads you to be a better steward of nature and to contribute positively to your community, it's a good thing. It affects the life of the religious one positively. It should not hold a position of authority, though, as in government.

Yes, it gives people hope and faith and that's healthy. I DON'T THINK IT SHOULD HOLD POWER IT SHOULD BE FREE WILL THOSE THAT WANT IT CAN HAVE IT.

At best, religion is a waste of time that accomplishes nothing. If you're going to put your hands together, you might as well twiddle your thumbs as pray.

At worst, religion is and has been the excuse for the worst atrocities in human history - murder and genocide (both bodily and culturally), theft of land and wealth, etc.

Religion is almost always the latter. Aside from the Baha'is and Quakers, I can't name a religion without blood on its hands (and even in the case of Quakers, that's a dubious statement).

For those who want to do something productive instead of something closer to masturbation, on the same day as the "national day of prayer", there is the "Gift Of Life Day" where atheists, secularists, and anybody with decency can go down to their local blood band and donate a pint. It will do a lot more good and save more lives than any amount of "prayer".

Edit:

I see another lying godbot is on the "for" side.

As Bertrand Russell once noted, the reason Christianity and communism opposed each other so strenuously wasn't because of their differences. It was because of their similarities.

And another godbot posts a made-up statistic with no evidence. But then, his religion has no evidence, so for him to "think" that is an "argument" does not surprise.

Your not going to like this, but religion has caused less than 7% percent of the world's wars.

A belief in a god contradicts reason and creates people who don't take responsibility for their future. It gives people false hope and really doesn't seem to "fit in" with a society that is as developed as we are.

The story of Jesus can be seen throughout the ages by means of other supposed gods who share identical features such as; all born on the 24th December, all had the 3 kings bearing gifts etc all were crucified and all rose again. If this is the case, who do we believe when each religion states "you shall worship the one and only god". The Bible which contains both the old and new testament in which westerners read contains the same information as the holy book that the Muslims read minus the new testament, yet we are supposedly at a holy war with each other forgetting the fact that we share an almost identical holy word.
In terms of war... How many countries have gotten away with using the 'Holy wars' as an excuse to commit acts of Imperialism? Most well known is Israel... No one is stepping in to assist the poor Palestinians in this fight, cos we all retreat whenever its a "holy war" as we are scared of being called descriminators against Gods "chosen" people.
When was the last time we witnessed a miracle from god??

Does your argument not justify that interpretation is everything? Is religion to blame or are people to blame? The only difference in any religion is man's interpretation of it. Miracles occur every day. Look at the design of our universe and the design, biologically, of every human to ever live. Read about the placement of our earth in our solar system. The fact that my arteries, veins and capillaries could wrap around our earth approximately three times is pretty miraculous to me. The fact that no one human being will ever be exactly identical to you or me is miraculous. Not even identical twins. I think miracles are everywhere and that we either accept them as miracles or we don't. However, I can see where you are coming from. If there never were any religions, then we would all be on the same page. Maybe. But the fact is that there was and we have to accept it and move on. And we definitely have to stop placing blame or else our disagreements will continue and we will never forge ahead to create a better life and world for those that follow.

Religion is the enemy of humankind. Our leaders go around the world mindlessly touting the virtues of democracy as if it was some magic restorative that could bring any third-world country up to the standards of the civilized world.

If we study history, though, and ask how it was that Europe and its colonial offshoots came to dominate the world, it's perfectly clear that democracy has nothing to do with it. It was only in the 20th century that these countries became fully democratic by granting voting rights to women and ethnic minorities. Yet they had already risen to dominate the world, to push out the frontiers of human knowledge in almost every sphere, long before that.

The key difference between Europe and its offshoots and the rest of the world was not democracy, but secularism. Europeans had freed themselves from the vice of superstition. It was this which allowed them to achieve great things. Even if they still nominally believed in some system of superstition, they did not allow it to dominate their lives. For them, it was a marginal affair. Instead of preaching democracy, therefore, our great leaders should go around preaching atheism.

The Soviets preached atheism in Central Asia. It didn't quite work out the way they thought it would.

Religion teaches people not to take responsibility for their own actions, instead blaming things on "the devil" or "God's will"; it teaches people not to question their beliefs, but to believe blindly; it teaches rejection of reality in favor of a comforting fantasy and it divides people on the basis of what imaginary friend they worship. There isn't anything positive that you can get with religion that you cannot get without it.

Religion, since it's onset has done nothing but set man against man in an unprovable often bloody battle of ideology. If there is a god or gods surly this was not their goal and organized religion in this sense should cease to exist. You should not need a church to communicate with God and it is the organization of religions that create atrocities like the crusades.
