Do past historical events determine how we do things today?

It enables us to learn from our past mistakes. Wheather we apply it, that's another story.

We learn from our mistakes. If we didn't, we would consistently make the same mistake if we ignore our history.

The society we live in did not just come about by chance. Our present day views on religion, politics and such were molded and influenced by historical figures and those historical figures are the foundation of who and what we are today. History is something that everyone should pay close attention to. It is a way to show us how much there is at stake in our life.

History has a habit of repeating it's self.
And the one thing we learn from history is we don't learn from it.

History is extremely important. And yes, we should learn from history. Problem is, history is usually taught with an agenda. It's great having the Internet where we can so easily research history from different sources and angles. Gathering history from different sources is vital.

I live in astonishment in the lack of historical knowledge of college graduates and the total ignorance of some of the most relevant historical lessons.

For western civilization, one must know European history. And European history is insane.

Of course history is important for the progress of Humankind. You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been.

Of course. History shows us the mistakes man has made, by having an in depth knowledge of them we can avoid making the same ones again.

History is a subject that tells us about what glorious past we have had in this world and how unlucky we are that we could not become a part of that past. For some history may be a subject not so interesting, but if somebody gets to acquire the pulse and essence of history then no one can stop him from being a lover of history. It is such a subject that lets us learn a lot about the significant past that the world had, all its happenings, incidents and that every moment is so much engraved in each and word of history. It is the history that tells us what culture we belong to, what ideas mankind had in the beginning of their life, how they transformed every obstacle into something useful. Thus history remains to really important for us.

O yeah. We learn from what happened. We can see what we did wrong and what we did right from our past and that helps us plan for a future tomorrow. Its that simple.

History and ample knowledge of your background is important because it keeps you rooted. When youngsters get to know of the sacrifices that their ancestors offered just so that the future generations could live in peace and luxury they are inspired to work hard and to maintain what people before them achieved after facing several hardships.

History also has a lot of lessons to teach. Wise are those who take heed from the experiences of people before them.

I think history is important because we can learn from previous people's mistakes and try to make the world a better place. The only problem is, that isn't happening as much as one would hope, because there are nearly always wars going on, and in a way society is getting worse not better because we want things and fight to get them, causing distress and hurt. I think if everyone in society actually wanted and tried hard enough to make the world a better place then it would happen, but some people are interested in causing pain in the world.

Like Bulldog said, 'What happens today, will affect what will happen tomorrow', and all these 'today' will become history, so I think history is very important.

From environmental point of view, if we don't take actions now such as save energy, save resource, have a greener life, we will not have good future.

I completely agree. History helps to learn lessons. Without it, we'd be starting from scratch constantly. But in reality, there is no possible way that we could not recognize our past. It would just be foolish, and recklessly ignorant.

Yes. I believe that past historical events do determine how we do things in today's society. In each and every historical event, there are many successes and failures and we learn a lot from each success and from each failure. I believe that the future is built from pieces of the past. There is a saying that the past always comes back to haunt you, and I believe that is true in every aspect. The past does tend to repeat itself in modern events. So, yes. I believe that the past really does affect the present and the future in many ways. This is why everyone should watch the news or read the newspapers everyday. What happens today, will affect what will happen tomorrow.

I think it's interesting like no other...

But no. Past mistakes are constantly remade. Hitler made the same mistakes (Russia) that were made in WWI.

Besides, other than the "we'll learn from it" there's no real For arguments. I'd stand to be wrong.
