Greed Is A Good Thing
It seems a culture that worships individualism, self-interest, self-autonomy, right to choose, libertine freedoms; would think that maximum greed is a good thing because it represents the ultimate virtue of limitless self-interest and self-autonomy. So, it seems greed would be a good thing in such a society.

Greed IS a good thing! Without greed then we wouldn't know the true value of a dollar... I mean greed is what makes this world go round! But oh well. Maybe that's the only child talking in me

Yes only the child talking Mr Charisma, and we all know the value of a Dollar after the events of the last few days.

The argument against greed is always a moral one, as we can see from the two against arguments; however, they disagree simply because they cannot see the bigger picture. The whole point of society is that the greater good (the interest of the majority) is served by every person striving to achieve their own interest. If we accept this is as true, it can only be the case that the greater good is served by everyone striving after their own interest more actively. Hence Greed is a good thing.

Greed is not self-interest.
Greed is excessive lust for power money or other.
Self-interest is reasonable.

Greed and self interest are things to be punished, not rewarded.
Greed is merely the desire for material goods, and more and more of them, often unnecessarily.
The desire for commodities leads people and groups of people or institutions to gain at the expense of others rather than at the benefit of others, therefore at the detriment of society.

Most self-interest in excess causes harm to others, probably much greater than we realize. And I would include all forms of self-interest; not just economic.

I'm a little surprised that you would post this. Greed is one of the prime defects of character that can cause misery in one's life and the lives of those around the person who owns the greed. Greed is lack of balance and is an extreme form of materialism. Ambition is good, and some desire for financial security is also good, but greed is different.; greed changes a person and their priorities. A culture that is centered by greed will be one that has a poor sense of values and a distorted set of priorities.

My assertion wasn't necessarily that I, myself, thought it was a good thing, but that in a culture as described above it would seem to be a "good" thing based on the highest values of that culture i.e. absolute self-autonomy and radical self-interest, which in some ways are the only "absolutes" in our postmodern culture. I, myself, think that one must have a "healthy" economic self-interest, but not excessive; and there are, of course, huge responsibilities to care for those who cannot or have difficulty taking care of themselves, financially.

I must confess, though, that a number of years ago, I would probably say I was a bit over the top on the economic self-interest scale :)

I think placing value on your own self-interests and greed are different things.

We are all self-interested and that is a good thing, not greed.

If one believes in freedoms, self-autonomy, the right to choose; why shouldn't one have the right to be as greedy as he wants to be. (By the way, I am not a proponent of greed. I'm just raising the question.)

The pleasure is in the giving not the taking.
To be greedy is a very selfish act and what is fundamentally wrong in to-days society.

it is good to be for Self, but not selfish in the sense you walk on someone else's rights.

One person's rights end where your's begins. And vice versa.

Good point Charlee. But I think its not a good thing.

You are right about our culture. GK Chesterton said it this way "Therefore, the modern man in revolt has become practically useless for all purposes of revolt. By rebelling against everything he has lost his right to rebel against anything."

It's a logical argument that a selfish society should consider greed a good thing, and yes the US is a very selfish society. But sorry I just don't have the stomach to back that up.

Never in my life have I favored greed. Even in those times when greed was in vogue in movies, politics, business, etc. And they claimed the virtues of greed were driving the marketplace and creating jobs I stayed steadfast against it. It's sad that our US culture has grown to embrace the quick buck (lottery, gambling, stock windfalls, etc.) over hard work. And what Wall Street and banks pulled to get us into our current sorry state is criminal.

But you stated a good argument.

I feel the need to defend the lottery; living in England, the lottery has funded huge levels of national pride. By John Major's investment of lottery funds in cycling, the whole nation has benefited by sweeping a considerable amount of cycling medals.
