In America, Atheists Are The New Blacks
Atheists are the most oppressed minority in America. Blacks were once a despised group, but now America may be on the verge of having a black President. There are almost no politicians in America, though, who admit to being atheists. If any did admit it, their political careers would almost certainly be over. Many Americans openly profess their prejudice against atheists in a way they would not dream of doing about members of other minority groups. Hatred of atheists has become the last acceptable prejudice. Instances of anti-atheist discrimination and harassment abound in America. Atheists are the new blacks.

America must have as much of a fundamentalist and warped idea of the Christian religion as the fanatical Islamist do of theirs.
Between the two of them for most normal people they have destroyed any hope of religion ever being seen as anything other than a brainwashed control mechanism, when there is a hell of a lot of good messages in both religions.
I dont want to thank God for my touchdown at the superbowl, or my son blowing himself up, I want to thank him for a better world than the one He has given us.
If its not all brainwashing, what the hell else is it?

Even though I don't live in America, this issue makes me simultaneously angry and disappointed in the human race. I'm an Atheist, and I refuse to accept that it's okay to discriminate against someone for a belief that there is no god.
I've seen several articles and tv programmes on the subject, and I just can't see why people have such a problem. Live and let live! -_-

Atheists are because some people, I won't name names, seem to think that their religious fantasies give them the right to impose their ideas and views on others and anyone who won't blindly acknowledge those views gets abused.

It happened recently in Illinois where Rep. Monique Davis told an atheist that he had no right to even be in the courthouse.

Come on Cephus, that's not really an example of oppression. If you were to go to a university and see how a professor of faith is treated, then you would see an institutionalized oppression. If you see how a Christian is treated in the Hollywood arena, you would again see wide spread discrimination.

This is true and this is the way it should be. America was built and developed by the grace of God and no one wants Atheists around. You Atheists don't believe in God, but you would not hesitate to take and spend money that says, "In God we Trust.” You do not hesitate to swim in oceans created by God, eat fruit and animals created by God, and enjoy everything God gave us. Atheists are the biggest hypocrites on the face of the Earth. You can be atheist if you want, but you should not have the right to enjoy the same rights as Christians. God created his world for us who believe in him. If you don't believe in him, why benefit from his creation?

This is so ridiculous and irrational I don't even know where to begin. You're not only wrong, you're fractional wrong. You're wrong at every possible resolution of your argument, no matter how far you zoom in or out, you're just as wrong.

Objection! To compare the black's oppression to the atheist group's so-called 'discrimination' and oppresion doesn't even match up. Blacks were judged for their looks and therefore, were enslaved and were persecuted horribly while atheists don't even match up to that at all. In fact, atheists always push down religion, and they are the ones who are discriminating and oppressing ideas and judging it instead.

I can't see how you compare being blocked from political office to being forced to work a plantation and being beaten constantly. This said atheists (which I am 1 of) are not in the same league with blacks. In addition you say the most discriminated against this is also wrong because gays, lesbians, and crossdressers are more discriminated against than atheists.

I understand your debate. However, isolated incidences of "oppression" happen over ALL spectrums. There is no heavy handed oppression of atheists in the states. These incidences of discrimination you cite are, at best, small minded people doing small minded things. Stay out of the sticks to increase Worldly knowledge. But frequent the sticks for Earthly knowledge.

I've lived in the US for 56 years, and I have never once seen the athiest oppressed, hidell you can try to spread all your junk, but that is just not true. Even the nasty churches like rev Wrights church are tolerated here and no one goes there to bother them. I remember in the 60's in San Francisco, Anton Levey had his church of satan, and no one burnt him down, he practiced in SF til he died, years later. So you can try to spread all the lies you want, but there still just lies.

There is most certainly oppression against atheists in the U.S.

Just last fall I saw a story on the Internet about a girl who was kicked off her high school basketball team because she was atheist and wouldn't pray with the team. When the story broke the townspeople stopped patronizing her parents' business. That seems pretty oppressive to me.

No, we aren't herded into camps like the Japanese-Americans were, or enslaved like the blacks, or ghettoized like the Irish. But to every big-hearted young kid who finds himself suddenly ostracized, it's a heartbreaking event.

(The courts forced the team to let the girl play. But she couldn't anymore.)

That said, the life of the atheist is generally far, far better than it was for the blacks.

Statistics (yes, general term I know) have recently shown a slow but noticeable decline in Christianity, with an almost proportional increase in atheism/agnosticism, I believe that if anything, ridiculing Religion has become more popular than than practising it in some countries.

As people begin to become smarter I believe that they begin to see the truth behind religion and the bible

And so Atheism is on the rise

Now when people ask me if i am religious and i tell them a atheist they say "U don't believe in anything" It is annoying because I believe in myself and I believe in science and evolution now I would not consider that a religion my any means but I would consider it scientific theory

This is all very interesting to me
as my father wants to become a priest my grandfather was the archbishop of Liberia

Episcopalian I think

And my mom was a catholic but recently realized she didn't believe in God either

We all took our own path on what we thought was right

But I will say I am sick of people saying god exists without proof

It is touchy because people with scientific minds need scientific proof

And religious people say "look around and say proof is all around us"

There is no oppression against atheists, and certainly nothing to compare to what black people have been through. There is close minded idiocy on both sides. However, once in a while you will find some intelligent even handed discourse, but probably not here.

I have found some of the most religious people to be atheists. They have more faith in their conviction than most people who attend church, but i digress.

It's unfair and inaccurate to compare alleged discrimination against atheists to the sort of economic and social oppression (and violent attacks) that blacks once faced. Atheists can attend university in the US, they can win scholarships just like anyone else, they will likely find employment wherever they go and few people will ask about their religious affiliation when they are called in for an interview. They can be economically successful, regardless of their lack of faith in God.

If atheists want to get elected and wish to be open about their lack of faith, then they will simply have to convince their constituents that their lack of religion should not matter one bit when it comes to politics, or they should explain the rationale behind their world-view. If they do this, but Americans decide that they would still rather elect a candidate who believes in God, then that's simply tough luck for the atheist, but frankly nothing to whine about and certainly no good reason to claim that they are being oppressed. Perhaps one day public opinion will change, but until then, atheists will just have to contend with the fact that their world-view is unappealing to many Americans, who seem to believe that having some sort of faith is an important personal quality for anyone who runs for public office.

Atheists can only enjoy the freedoms you describe because religious belief (or lack thereof) is not as obvious as skin colour. If it was, you would find many more instances of overt discrimination : shops refusing to serve them and so forth.
