Of course it is. Otherwise, how would you learn anything? |

Discernment is cool! But don't be caught out by cold facts. Brrr |

Doing your own research is absolutely necessary for forming your own worldview. You're not obligated
to go and actually do the archaeology, although, it would be kinda cool. Reading the reports is
almost as good, and is technically called research. For example, in philosophy, research is reading
books. It's different in every domain, but reading the reports of those who did the dirty work would
be considered research. In fact, when you want to buy a computer, or some other object, the process
of going around to different computer stores, asking about pros and cons, and finding prices would
be considered research. And someone who goes and buys something without having researched it a
little bit is what we call an impulsive shopper, and is generally considered rather naive (with
reason). So, doing your own research is actually necessary to life, and Grokit, learning from the
experiences of others, so that you don't have to make every mistake in life, is actually a form a
research. You have to actually "research" so that you can "learn" from the experiences of others.
Most research is actually based on the experiences of others. |

Yes but its also stupid to ignore our history and what we learned before. |

Aye, truer words were never spoken. There's no point in agreeing with something just because you
know lots of people who do. You need to make sure you know what you're talking about. |

Wow. What a great topic ! I like it.
Answer? Yes, I have always been one take the road less traveled by and that is what makes all the
difference: Do your own thing, including your own research.
Sometimes others mistakenly at best overlook one or two items of interest, and unless you studied
yourself? You would be none the wiser.
It really does pay to look things up for yourself.
If you want anything done right, do it yourself. |

Absolutely. Even when you can't do your own research you can at least research other people
research. In this day and age with so much access to unverified information it is important to asses
your level of confidence in other peoples investigations. Look at all the areas of public debate
where most people get most of their information from politicians or political organizations whose
information is so far removed from the original source of the research as to be nonsensical. Global
warming and second hand smoke are two perfect examples. On the subject of global warming on this
site alone most of the people I have heard on either side of the political spectrum have presented
information that they believe to be fact, that has little or no relation to the actual research
findings or current scientific debate. People tend to judge the veracity of the information they get
based on their own gut reaction and their own political leanings. |

It's preferable. Not always possible. In fact when you do research you're usually still getting
2nd hand information shaped by others' subjective opinions and conclusions. But yes, it's still
preferable for you to try to do some sort of research. |
