I feel strongly that the mind can keep you in good health. Please see comments in the related debate 12th July.

I disagree because gangrene and leprosy are illnesses but they are definitely not in the mind!

I have to disagree. The mind is powerful if one knows how to use it, but to defend against physical illness? I don't think so. I am a firm believer in "we are what we eat". Even now it goes beyond that phrase into "...what we breath and touch". To go even deeper is to touch on the subject of DNA. The mind is strong, but not strong enough to even deter the simplest of colds.

Against.

Although I agree with you the mind can play a role in prevention and healing -- there is no way - NO WAY - 85% of illness is in the mind. Our world is awash in bacteria and viruses and your mind cannot always defeat those, it may send some white blood cells to fight or raise your temperature but those weapons do not work on everything. And what about all the pollution and toxins and natural poisons surrounding us, because your mind can't beat plutonium? And what about genetic conditions, congenital heart disease, aneurysms, etc? And what about all the people who desperately cling to life through prayer, exercise, positive thought, whatever, but still can't beat their cancer or other illnesses?
