Some species of fish are almost as entertaining as a mammal or rodent, but before getting ANY sort
of pet a person NEEDS to learn how to care for it. What grabbed my attention on this debate were the
words "clean out the tank" which should NEVER be done! A 30% water exchange, using a gravel-vacuum
(basically just a siphoning hose with a big plastic cup at one end) every 2-4 weeks is all that is
needed, which is much EASIER than "cleaning out the tank" for one thing, and does not destroy the
biological filtration that generally requires 5-6 weeks to build up on the surfaces of the gravelbed
from the time the tank is initially set up. This 5-6 week period is when most fish are lost, and it
is due to the "cycling" of the tank. Those of you interested in fish or who have had trouble keeping
them, please research biological filtration before setting up or draining and "cleaning out" your
next aquarium and you will find it a lot easier and find yourself a lot more successful at keeping
your fish alive. |

I agree on some levels but fish can be a much as a hassle as dogs. Not like I'm saying dogs are
annoying but aren't there hairless cats now for people with allergies? Besides, if a person wants a
pet, a fish won't keep them occupied for very long. |

I use to have a few fish, but they always died within weeks. And cleaning out the fish tank is a
real big pain. Overall fish are not worth the hassel. You can pretty much compare a fish to a cat,
they do nothing and they are useless. |
