If What You Believed In Was Wrong, You Would Want To Know
I recall hearing something similar to this topic’s heading from somewhere that I can’t quite remember right now, but it caught my attention nonetheless. Suppose whatever you believed in could be proven wrong. I’m curious as to how many people would actually be willing find out and then face the fact that they were wrong, and how many people would prefer to go on believing what they do without knowing if it were truly right or wrong. This debate goes for any form of belief system that draws conclusions (whether they be objective or subjective).

I would want to know. Some things can't be proven wrong that I believe, though.

Probably life's greatest purpose is to know what's true. It seems if one has ever changed his mind about a belief it usually indicates he has gained better understanding and knowledge about it. Most of us have changed our minds at various times, I would guess.

Yup. What's the point to seeking if you don't look at what you find?

The problem with this is most people will not accept that their core belief system is wrong. They will reject all notions of it. Maybe not everyone, but pretty much everyone. The reason why is their core belief system is attached to...actually is the very fabric of their identity. People are not so willing to give up their identity. They will first disbelieve any claim made against it. They will not accept the evidence, and work hard at proving it wrong. Otherwise they would have to change their identity, who they are, and that is not something that is done easily, if at all.

Yes, I would want to know. It's better to face unpleasant truths than to live in the false comfort of illusion. Take the red pill.

Then face the unpleasant truth that God exists and clean up your act.

Yes. I used to think "drugs" were bad because the police who came to my school told me so. Teachers said so too. In college people were real and questioned authority and I learned about most "drugs" being less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. Right now I could still be an opinionated bigot without any knowledge of the subject but now I know and I think I'm a better person.

Absolutely. I actually care about what I believe. I strive to believe as many true things as possible, to reject as many false things as possible, and to know why everything around me falls into one of those two categories. I test everything I believe constantly, in order to see if evidence has changed or become available that would make me change my position.

This is difficult. If you speak of people, there are some things that i would prefer to not know. I don't need to know everything about them that might hinder my feelings about them. No person is perfect, and i don't need to learn about the imperfections of others to impact my belief in them.

Since my spiritual belief system is pretty open to ebb and flow i am not sure how i would accommodate concrete information that it is completely wrong. However, i would like to the best of my ability accept truth.
