I'll stick my neck out here and say that I think the Palestinians are already being persecuted by
Israel. They build settlements on their lands, they withhold essential and basic services and they
regularly carry out extremely heavy-handed military raids.
Israel is an extremely rich country with a well-equipped army; they don't have too much to fear from
the Palestinians who they keep fairly much in poverty.
Not forgetting the billions of dollars America pump into Israel. Much more than they have ever done
for any other country. |

It is impossible to find a solution at this moment we need to focus on peace and less blood shed
over there. |

Persecution and ethnic cleansing are what Israel is doing now. Israel could have peace if it really
wanted it.
The facts of history is that prior to the creation of Israel, Muslims were the protectors of Jews in
various countries while it was the Christians who were murdering and persecuting them (e.g. Nazi
Germany). Anti-Jewish animosity among Muslims is a new phenomenon.
As well, Muslims have long memories - to the US, 2007 is ancient history, but to the Muslims, the
Crusades are current events. People with long memories also tend to be more forgiving - if Israel
were to accept the 1967 borders, Muslims countries would accept Israel's existence.
Israel likes the current situation, but the only way that can be sustained is through US assistance.
When the US can no longer send billions annually, Israel will be overrun. If Israel's leaders
weren't so set on revenge and genocide, they would realize the window on peace is closing.
The Jews were innocent victims in the past, but if there is a second mass murder of Jews, this time
by Muslims, Israel will have brought it on themselves. |

I agree with Hidell and MacKenzie that there will be no winners, nor losers in this conflict if,
hopefully, a solution is provided.
The peace process in Northern Ireland is a good (if somewhat smaller, and slightly less complicated)
example that could give some tips on a solution. It's difficult, but I don't think the problem will
be resolved until both sides (Israelis and Palestinians) learn to SHARE the disputed lands, such as;
Gaza and the West Bank.
But, until there is a solution, there are no winners, only losers, and when there is a solution you
would hope that both would benefit to an extent that suits them both. |

There won't be a clear winner, nor will there be a clear loser. Additionally, there is no single
Israeli-Palestinian War to speak of. Instead, we have a series of drawn-out, inter-related
conflicts, some of which are a direct result of the second Palestinian Intifada.
The most likely scenario is that this conflict will drag on for at least another generation and
neither side will get what they are looking for. Israel wants to live in peace and security, without
the constant worry that most of their Muslim neighbours would prefer to run the country's Jewish
citizens into the sea, due to their rabid anti-semitism and Arab nationalism.
On the other hand, the Palestinians are not likely to get their own, independent state in Gaza and
the West Bank, in large part because many of their top leaders are completely unwilling to come to a
rational compromise (in which both sides would be willing to concede certain demands) and are
seemingly incapable of truly repudiating terrorism. |

I don't see how there can be any winner unless the entire population of one side or the other is
exterminated. It's a conflict that will go on until, maybe, some acceptable accommodation is reached
by both sides.
The hatred of Israel by the Muslims is seemingly ineradicable. Therefore Israel will have to cope
with the consequences of it unless the Muslims cease to exist. Israel has already achieved military
dominance in the Middle East. Yet its Muslim antagonists are still able to strike at it using the
techniques of asymmetric warfare.
If the Muslims were somehow able to defeat Israel on the battlefield using conventional weapons (and
there is no sign that they are anywhere near being able to do that) Israel would employ nuclear
weapons in its own defence. This almost happened in 1973 when Egypt's armies made significant
military gains and were advancing on Israel. |
