If Evolution in this debate refers to Darwinian evolution, and if that is taken to mean the belief
that all organisms descended from a common ancestor through a series of small random mutations, and
that by implication, there is no God, only material things, and when one dies one goes to
nothingness, then I partially agree with this comment. I would like to modify it slightly:
LIfe still has value, but has no meaning or purpose.
If one believes in the Darwinian evolution in the first paragraph, what would be the logical
consequences of those beliefs? Given our understanding of ourselves and others, wouldn't such a
person:
1) Devote every minute of his life to pleasure, both sensual (sex, eating, etc.) and refined
(popularity, wealth, etc.)?
2) Show compassion to others, but only as much as needed to make a good impression. (It's
unpleasant to feel that others believe you're selfish.)
3) Never stand-up for any issue if it puts him at risk of life or limb. (the military, peace
corps, and rescue work are definitely not options.)
4) Never calling anything inherently good or evil, and not stand up for either.
Please explain why life has any meaning other than the pursuit of pleasures in all of its forms?
Bonus Question:
Did matter and the laws of physics have a beginning, or did they always exist? Explain your
answer scientifically.
3) When one gets sick and old and finds no pleasures, kill oneself. |
