Homework Should Be Banned
I think children should be given some home work on daily basis as this thing makes them responsible, and more concerned about their studies. But over burden is not good as well, as they also need some time to relax and play.

The fact is all our brains need recharging. With school kids, that means having an evening filled with games and fun. Those evening activities need not have to be diverging in interest from learning needs. They could for instance be fun quizzes that motivate kids to learn for rewards, customized science movies that reveal scientific facts in ways no kid would lose interest in, and the like. Schools and parents can surely experiment with such ideas that will use kid's evenings to bring about a Win- Win rather than keep beating about the bush whether homework is right or wrong!

Homework reinforces what you are taught in school right? WRONG! Studies have proven that homework does NOT reinforce what we are taught in school and does NOT help. Kids needs some sort of ways to test themselves right? WRONG AGAIN! They have these things in schools (don't know if you've heard of them) that are called TESTS! They are given all at one time in every class (which I don't get why) and we have to study for them to do our bests or else we will be looked down upon by our teachers and peers. Homework teaches independeces right? NOT REALLY! What happens when a kid doesn't understand one of the problems? He/She asks his/her parents to help them and most of the time they don't know because a lot of the stuff we learn won't be used in our lives, so they have forgotten. The work needs to be done at school so a teacher (who is payed to teach and actually knows the material) can assist!. Teachers also use homework as a grade booster. Why? Because the better the students grades, the better their pay. I once had a teacher who gave me an A for the quarter when I really had a C. What was her reason for giving me this grade? Extra credit! She gave me a small homework assignment to do for the next day and if I did it I would get an A. Most kids would take this oppertunity, but I decieded that it wouldn't be fair to the kids who did their homework in the class (I can't remember what class it was it was that pathetic! We learned about managing our time and how to fold a peice of paper so we could take notes on it...) I didn't take the offer and she was stunned. She wanted her money and gave me the A anyway! Perfect example of how some teachers are, greedy. Teenage suicide is on the rise (recently lost a good friend from suicide RIP ANDRI) and the most common reason is from stress. What else is on the rise? Homework. All the schools are competing with each other to get the better scores on the State Achievement Tests so they can have a better record as a school. They want it so bad that they do not care what it takes because it is all about the MONEY. Teachers are told to give more homework so it 'reinforces' what we are taught, but it doesn't. We are under stress to do all of our homework, do to it on time, to make sure we have enough sleep so we don't fall asleep in school, and to do it right. On top of that, we have after school activities. Our time in school is wasted by stupid classes such as FCS, Choir, Art and Study Hall(these can all be done out of school). If we eliminated those couple rediculous courses, we would have more time to be at home and we would be likely to get more physical activity than 20 minutes of badminten. This would eliminate PE and then the day would be so short, Lunch wouldn't be an issue. This would mean school days would be shortened to three hours and students would be just as smart. If that would happen, I wouldn't mind all that homework because I would have that extra 3 hours of time during the day and be less stressed. I am currently in 8th grade and am taking all honors and 10th grade honors math. What I don't get is that some nights I will only get about 30 minutes of homework, but then the next night, 4 teacher will give big assisments due the next day. Do they plan to give us their homework all on the same day just to mess with us? Why didn't two of the four give it to us on the first day. Some days I come home and have homework from 3:30 to 9:00. By that time, I am exhasted and am going to pass out! I can't take it anymore and my mother sees it too. We actually considered saying our religion was against any schooling done at the home and it was to be done strictly at school. I am thinking of enrolling in online courses it is so bad. HOPE STUPID CLASSES ARE SHORTENED OR HOMEWORK IS BANNED!

Yes
cuz 1) You go to school about the entire day
2) You learned enough at school
3) People got other stuff to do instead of doing hw
4) Makes kids hate school
5) Causes stress
6) Hurts trees :)

Yah i totally agree children r already spending most of there time at school so why give homework its a perfect waste of time and it causes lots of problems such as

obesity: As u all might be knowing when ur doing ur homework and especially if u hve lots of it then u might not get time to head out to the feild and do some exercising

relationship problems in families:if children r given too much homework they dont have enough time to spend with their families which causes relationship problems

We have totally enough time for doing work in school and stuff. If there is too much homework, we wouldnt have time to do other stuff that we like and all. And those stuff may not necessary be able to be taught well in school. Like for example piano or sports or whatever. If lets say, person A is very good at soccer. But he cannot practice it and stuff because of too much homework. The world have lost a wonderful soccer player. Also, mayb person A was only good at soccer and nothing else. He might become jobless!
Another reason why i think hw should be banned is that if there is still alot of hw after a long day of school, people might not have lots of enthusiasm doing it. And since they dont have much enthusiasm, they would just rush through it , not remembering anything or revising it. Their goal is just to finish it. They would not care how well they did.and so

Homework takes up alot of time that we could be used for excersize. We sit in school for around seven hours and when we are forced to go home and sit and do more homework it takes away our chance of excercize. And children need excersize as does everybody.

Plus when we're at school we learn things and we spend an hour each day per class so i dont think there is any need to make us come home and do more

also ive noticed that sometimes our teachers give our assignments at the end of class and we go home and realize we dont understand some things. Thats why i belive homework should be banned:)

Children between the ages 6-17 are getting less family time, health, and sleep! I'm only a kid and i have frequently had breakdowns. So please, parents and teachers think of your children and students from a child's view point

It depends, MOST schools (don't reply to this saying you aren't one of them) give reasonable HW. However overachieving schools like TJ give way too much but the students who go there know that prior to their enrollment so I'm not sure...

Excess homework is unfair and stressful to kids.

Think about it in comparison to work: Once your shift ends, you can go home and do pretty much whatever you want. You could sit around, drawing poodles on your hand until you had to go to work again.

With school, though, once you get out, you have to then spend quite a bit of time doing mindless, unintuitive worksheets. And, when you have a project, it can consume several days.

Free time helps keep people sane, so let them have it by cutting back on homework!

I could easily post on both sides of this particular fence, but select this side, because if a teacher formats the information into more intense clumps of information and uses a lot of visual-aids, homework is then made redundant.
No need to create homework: Unnecessary burden for children, it is a matter of over-kill.

I am a student in high school. I don't mind homework as long as it is in moderation. But no homework altogether?

Homework plays an important role in a student's education. It fosters independent learning, it develops one's study habits and it reinforces learning. How can students complain about not having not enough recreation time? A student could create some time within 24 hours for their recreation or relaxing.

Homework can also be proof that a student is up to date with their curriculum. It helps memorise information and other work. If a student attends class and then goes home free of homework, what he previously learned in class that day could have been forgotten, so homework will then bring that knowledge keep it memorised.

Homework increases your chance of future success and also 'practice makes perfect.'

As much as we hate homework, it is essential. It reinforces the lessons we learned in class, and gives us extra practice. The only way you can get out of homework is to convince your parents to homeschool you. It rocks!! (That is just my point of view, no one needs to debate it)

well what about time??? homework disrupts families [weather in time], overburdens children, and limits learning. If children didn't have SO much homework they would be eager to learn. Many teacher said they 'have' to assign homework but they don't want to because they don't have much time to grade it and that it ruins their social life too. Either way after 2 national surveys, i and many other people have discovered a wide range of opinions.

I would agree they shouldn't get some types of homework. There are some assignments they may need school resources to do properly, and/or some may demand an unrealistic time commitment. However, there will always be something justified to send home as an assignment. Even a basic show-and-tell in grade school is technically a homework assignment yet it's fun and everyone may learn and benefit from it.

I'm a student, but, No, I don't believe in banning homework. Not because I believe that more homework is good or that we have enough homework, but because I believe that the grading aspect of A-F for homework should be banned and that schools should change homework assignments to be more creative. Homework should require. I thinking i and innovating (something like painting, writing a poem, or conducting an experiment) rather than just drilling and memorizing and writing information on a piece of paper. This way students that need more than just classwork to help them understand subject matter can use homework as a different avenue to enlighten them even more on the subject. The work should be made more open-ended to have a student to be able to learn and understand a topic using their own interest and style of learning, and without the stress of forcibly memorizing something that would eventually be forgotten with time. I do believe that many teachers/schools assign too much homework, but like i said homework just needs to be "more interactive, less drilling." That way kids learn HOW to learn. Not WHAT to learn. Homework should be banned for Elementary Schools and Middle schools should get a limited amount of work.

These are some good articles about the topic at question.

This is just my opinion, but I just think that to make up for their inadequacy at teaching... a teacher may assign more homework in hopes the student can come to find more answers OR the school policy sucks. That's why students get too much homework. In other words, PUBLIC SCHOOLS BLOW!

":One isn't born knowing how to make sensible lesson plans and homework assignments," said Karen Zabrowski, a seventh-grade reading teacher at Chippewa Falls Middle School in Wisconsin.

But teacher knowledge is often trumped by school system policies, created by school boards whose members are often not educators, teachers have said." - The Washington Post

"here is what Duke University professor Harris Cooper has to say:

Elementary school students get no academic benefit from homework -- except reading and some basic skills practice -- and yet schools require more than ever.

High school students studying until dawn probably are wasting their time because there is no academic benefit after two hours a night; for middle-schoolers, 1 1/2 hours.

And what's perhaps more important, he said, is that most teachers get little or no training on how to create homework assignments that advance learning." - quote from The Washington Post

The problem isn't that there's too much work. The problem is there's not enough.

The material taught to children in elementary, junior and high school could be taught in 10 years, not 12. All kids are capable of learning it within that time instead of spinning their wheels for two more years.

What's needed is more reading, more thinking, and more evaluation by kids. The school systems fail in two ways: They are teaching kids what to think instead of _how_ to think, and they are stifling curiosity by putting the carrots in front of the kids instead of making them want it by working.

We should be making kids want to learn instead of learning to want. More homework that requires they think, instead of tedious time wasting, would do far more good.

Edit:

The purpose of "stick and carrot" is to make the donkey go forward to try and get it. If you put the carrot in the donkey's mouth, is it going to move?

Except in real life, the kids are given the answers instead of the skills to find the answers for themselves.

Homework most certainly should be given - it gives children responsibility and allow them to work at their own pace, spending, in some cases, as long as they want on a subject, and more on the subjects they like or are good at.

Excessive homework should be banned, but every now and then, a project or a report might fairly require some independent, after school work.

I think if you don't finish your work at school you need to finish it at home. I don't like it when teachers just make u do it for no reason other than to occupy yourself

Even though I'm a student I don't think homework should get banned because it gives the student time to study outside of school and time to work on stuff they didn't finish in school.

Homework is at all times necessary to perform better. This is the fundamental part of anybody’s process of education. Homework is always beneficiary to students or to sportsman as well. Homework is the most important stake of his or her forthcoming performance. It helps to enhance the skill of people to their respective fields. Basically the child students need the homework very much as they do not comprehend the inevitability of their studies. Homework makes them to recall the studies what they learn from their school. The regular practice of homework assists to prepare a student for his forthcoming exams which he faces everyday. Thus homework means to me the base of anyone’s future footmarks in social life. It should not be banned in any sense and in any time. It is should be always maintained to get the highest success.

 So does going to school.
The time for school has been set, it's unfair to the students to extend it without warning- we have lives and plans, I still need to rush some homework right now... which I should've done quite a while ago...

Homework not only teaches kids about the things they're currently learning in school, but also teaches them responsibility, independence, and self-reliance. The children have to be responsible to do homework or else they won't do well in school. If a child/teen can't pay attention in class, take an assignment home and finish it, then there is no hope for them in the real world and in their future.
Kids also need a way to sort of test themselves and see if they really understand what they discussed in class that day, to see of they've really learned. If kids knew all they had to do to pass a class was go to class and sit, they wouldn;t bother paying attention because they wouldn't be graded. If all they had was a test, they wouldn't know until it was too late that they don't understand the material.

Responsibility, independence, and self-reliance are all things I learned doing house-hold chores. I also learned discipline, which is something many schools cannot rightly say they can teach.
