Homework Should Be Banned
I think children should be given some home work on daily basis as this thing makes them responsible, and more concerned about their studies. But over burden is not good as well, as they also need some time to relax and play.

This is kinda long but worth reading. I've read a lot of the ideas from the poeple on the side that's all for homework. And some are ridiculous. First, stop criticizing people who aren't good spellers. That can not be blamed on homework in any way. That's because they simply didn't pay attention in school. Second, for all of you that are saying it builds on what you learned during the school day, sure it does, but a seven hour school day should be enough anyway. Third, it is not the difference between being successful and "flipping patties" for the rest of your life. I don't even think I have to explain that one. Forth, mostly all schools base the overall grade largely on homework. That is just unfair. Many people don't have the time for it, the teachers are not there to help and parents aren't always available or even smart enough to help their kids. And there is a huge amount of kids out there who are very inteligent but have their grade lowered by homework because they don't have the time for it. Please don't say "there's 24 hours in a day, they should have some time for it." School is 7 hours. Sleep is should be 7-9 hours. So no, they don't have 24 hours to do it. Let me give you a quick example of my average day. I get home from school, play hockey for a couple hours. Come home, shower, eat dinner. Right after that, there's usually a Devils game on. (I am a huge hockey/devil fan, so yes it is important and necessary for me to see it if I'm not at it.) By the time the game is over, its already passed 10:00. So i stay up as late as I can trying to solve problems 1-30 on page 345, writing out the whole problem, showing all work, solving and checking, then reading chapter 18, then writing a short story, then sovling chemical equations ect... Without any help from a teacher. Then I go to school the next day and teachers have the nerve to confront me about being tired while lowering my grade because I couldn't complete a ridiculous amount of pointless homework. I know a lot of you will say that homework and schoolwork are very important. I agree that school is important, and I have no problem doing the work while I'm there. But once i get home, I'm on MY time, and what I want to do comes before what a school wants me to do. It's my life, and I intend to enjoy it. Any fans of homework that want to argue with me? I'll be glad to prove you wrong.

There's seven hours of school a day. Giving kids more homework than we already have is gonna lead to kids not wanting to do it, dislike school even more, pull them further away from their home and social life, cause more stress, further restrict a kid's happiness and free life, and probably cause more obesity. Kids and teens should go to school, do work there, and learn THERE. Afterwards they should be enjoying their life as kids, hanging out with friends, playing sports and exercising their own intrests. Not doing more work they probably don't even want to be doing because A, it doesn't intrest them, B, they are thinking of other things such as the friends they could be hanging with or the sport they could be playing or the money they could be making at the job they could have, therefore they rush through it carelessly anyway and C, because a lot of it they will NEVER need to know again in their lifetime unless they are on jeopardy. Despite what many education-crazed people may think, education, learning, and success are not the only things people should focus on in life. There's also friendship, fun, enjoyment and personal time. And that's what people need to realize. That's the point of this debate. When it all comes right down to it, homework just isn't necessary. School is enough.

I think homework should just be set to revision, not major assignments. I am in year 11 at school, and I often receive projects that a often worth 20-30% of my semester's marks. This is too much! Shouldn't we be receiving help from a teacher for a project this crucial? But how, when we are at home? Most of the work I get set is too advanced for my parents, so I am often stuck alone trying to interpret how to complete my assignments, with help from nobody. Then, sometimes, I often get the wrong idea for the assignment, and it is my fault! Well how was I supposed to know what to do? There is noone to help me!

Now for my second point, it is time consuming. I am coming up to an age when I can start learning to drive, and it would benefit me to get a car. But cars are expensive, as is maintenance and fuel, so I need a job. However, I am also an Air Force Cadet, which I enjoy. But these things take up time. And if homework takes up the rest of the time, I have no time for anything else. We should be seeing our friends, and going to movies and living a life, but we can't. Instead we are home stressing about how to do homework.

So I think homework should not exist, and if so, it should just be a recap of what we have been taught, not giving major assignments.

I think that we should be givin unfinished work to do as homework, BUT that should be limited and we shouldnt be givin any work over the weekend, also i thibk that it should be optional so if we dont do it its our choice and responsibility! In a perfect world i would want it banned altogether! I mean seriously who like having all their time taken up by a boring and pointless task! Studies have shown that homework actually has no known benifits and so it just takes up vauable time. Also, i believe homework could be a contributer to obeisity in children as they have no time to excersize. I do not fully agree it should be banned and i can see SOME point in it. I may not be a great speller or a math whiz but i do know when something is wasting time! And i think we should save our time on more important things! (also im definatly no goody two shoes) like some of u little fairytailers! Haha i dislike teachers and school but i took that out of account to make my decision. Im actually doing an assign ment on weather i think it should be banned and for now i believe it should (:

I find this to be a serious topic, instead of whining and complaining like the other, I have come to a solution.
I have read many of the comments, and some people who are against homework usually have the same thing to say: It gives students something to do, or because they need practice. I've even seen some change their opinions AGREEING with some of the "For" delegates. But most of the people for banning homework cannot seem to come up with a serious reason. Now, I hate homework, nobody alive doesn't. But the reason I have for homework is because it is obsolete. Most of the time, teachers will give homework for several subjects at a time. This can be very controversial when several PROJECTS are given that are worth a high percentage, especially since teachers will debate their homework is more important than the other classes (not fair at all to the other teachers). I find that if teachers should give out homework, limit the amount given using a numbering system(if banning homework altogether is to radical) that requires teachers to WORK TOGETHER when they give out homework to make things easier on the students. This is my proposed system: A five point system.
Small assginments are one point
projects are 2.5 - three points based on size
and summative projects (exam type projects) are worth four.
It would work like this.
Every day, you start with five points
a teacher gives you a science sheet (small assignment). You now can either have four other assignments of the same size or one more and a project, or one more and an exam.
This system si worked out so that several teachers cannot assign projects at once. Once a project is assigned, It takes up the same amount of points until the due date (this is so a teacher cannot give a project a day later). In this way, homework can be managed more appropriately.
Teachers should also NOT give homework that is worth enough that someone could fail if they do badly, the summative should add up to be equal with all the previous homework (so good students do not have their average jeapordized by a single assignment)
Projects or summative projects should not be given a certain amount of time before the end of school either, and must leave room for if there is the be an extension for whatever reason.

I dearly hope that someone will happen upon my solution, and will consider putting it in to action. It would do me great joy to see it come into fruition in the future.

Homework is pointless i mean what does it do? I know it's supposed to help you study but what if you already know it? And for the people who don't study let them get F's. So why not just remove homework and poof! We don't have as much stress and we can get a better nights sleep! I mean come on just ban it already!

it was originally used in the middle ages as torture

No it wasn't. It was used to teach, not for torture. They used impalment, Judas cradle, coffin torture, the rack, the breast ripper, the pear of anguish, the breaking wheel, saw torture, the head crusher, and the knee splitter.

I hate homework just as much as the next person. I think that they should ban it because we do anough work in school already, so why do we need to go home and be put with stress for doing more of it? See, it is a little different for my school, Van Meter Junior High School. We have one-on-one computer access which means that we have Mac laptops that we take home and can call our own, until the end of the year obviously when we have to turn them in. So in our case we are not killing and cutting down trees because we hardly ever use paper. And I think that in our case homework is more fun to do at home because we have these laptops, but I still disagree with homework because most of the homework we do requires internet access and a lot of people in our school do not have wireless internet in our home, so I think that schools should ban homework all together and give us time at home to do things that are worth our while instead of sitting in a classroom for 7 hours.

The fact is all our brains need recharging. With school kids, that means having an evening filled with games and fun. Those evening activities need not have to be diverging in interest from learning needs. They could for instance be fun quizzes that motivate kids to learn for rewards, customized science movies that reveal scientific facts in ways no kid would lose interest in, and the like. Schools and parents can surely experiment with such ideas that will use kid's evenings to bring about a Win- Win rather than keep beating about the bush whether homework is right or wrong!

Homework reinforces what you are taught in school right? WRONG! Studies have proven that homework does NOT reinforce what we are taught in school and does NOT help. Kids needs some sort of ways to test themselves right? WRONG AGAIN! They have these things in schools (don't know if you've heard of them) that are called TESTS! They are given all at one time in every class (which I don't get why) and we have to study for them to do our bests or else we will be looked down upon by our teachers and peers. Homework teaches independeces right? NOT REALLY! What happens when a kid doesn't understand one of the problems? He/She asks his/her parents to help them and most of the time they don't know because a lot of the stuff we learn won't be used in our lives, so they have forgotten. The work needs to be done at school so a teacher (who is payed to teach and actually knows the material) can assist!. Teachers also use homework as a grade booster. Why? Because the better the students grades, the better their pay. I once had a teacher who gave me an A for the quarter when I really had a C. What was her reason for giving me this grade? Extra credit! She gave me a small homework assignment to do for the next day and if I did it I would get an A. Most kids would take this oppertunity, but I decieded that it wouldn't be fair to the kids who did their homework in the class (I can't remember what class it was it was that pathetic! We learned about managing our time and how to fold a peice of paper so we could take notes on it...) I didn't take the offer and she was stunned. She wanted her money and gave me the A anyway! Perfect example of how some teachers are, greedy. Teenage suicide is on the rise (recently lost a good friend from suicide RIP ANDRI) and the most common reason is from stress. What else is on the rise? Homework. All the schools are competing with each other to get the better scores on the State Achievement Tests so they can have a better record as a school. They want it so bad that they do not care what it takes because it is all about the MONEY. Teachers are told to give more homework so it 'reinforces' what we are taught, but it doesn't. We are under stress to do all of our homework, do to it on time, to make sure we have enough sleep so we don't fall asleep in school, and to do it right. On top of that, we have after school activities. Our time in school is wasted by stupid classes such as FCS, Choir, Art and Study Hall(these can all be done out of school). If we eliminated those couple rediculous courses, we would have more time to be at home and we would be likely to get more physical activity than 20 minutes of badminten. This would eliminate PE and then the day would be so short, Lunch wouldn't be an issue. This would mean school days would be shortened to three hours and students would be just as smart. If that would happen, I wouldn't mind all that homework because I would have that extra 3 hours of time during the day and be less stressed. I am currently in 8th grade and am taking all honors and 10th grade honors math. What I don't get is that some nights I will only get about 30 minutes of homework, but then the next night, 4 teacher will give big assisments due the next day. Do they plan to give us their homework all on the same day just to mess with us? Why didn't two of the four give it to us on the first day. Some days I come home and have homework from 3:30 to 9:00. By that time, I am exhasted and am going to pass out! I can't take it anymore and my mother sees it too. We actually considered saying our religion was against any schooling done at the home and it was to be done strictly at school. I am thinking of enrolling in online courses it is so bad. HOPE STUPID CLASSES ARE SHORTENED OR HOMEWORK IS BANNED!

Yah i totally agree children r already spending most of there time at school so why give homework its a perfect waste of time and it causes lots of problems such as

obesity: As u all might be knowing when ur doing ur homework and especially if u hve lots of it then u might not get time to head out to the feild and do some exercising

relationship problems in families:if children r given too much homework they dont have enough time to spend with their families which causes relationship problems

We have totally enough time for doing work in school and stuff. If there is too much homework, we wouldnt have time to do other stuff that we like and all. And those stuff may not necessary be able to be taught well in school. Like for example piano or sports or whatever. If lets say, person A is very good at soccer. But he cannot practice it and stuff because of too much homework. The world have lost a wonderful soccer player. Also, mayb person A was only good at soccer and nothing else. He might become jobless!
Another reason why i think hw should be banned is that if there is still alot of hw after a long day of school, people might not have lots of enthusiasm doing it. And since they dont have much enthusiasm, they would just rush through it , not remembering anything or revising it. Their goal is just to finish it. They would not care how well they did.and so

Homework takes up alot of time that we could be used for excersize. We sit in school for around seven hours and when we are forced to go home and sit and do more homework it takes away our chance of excercize. And children need excersize as does everybody.

Plus when we're at school we learn things and we spend an hour each day per class so i dont think there is any need to make us come home and do more

also ive noticed that sometimes our teachers give our assignments at the end of class and we go home and realize we dont understand some things. Thats why i belive homework should be banned:)

It depends, MOST schools (don't reply to this saying you aren't one of them) give reasonable HW. However overachieving schools like TJ give way too much but the students who go there know that prior to their enrollment so I'm not sure...

Excess homework is unfair and stressful to kids.

Think about it in comparison to work: Once your shift ends, you can go home and do pretty much whatever you want. You could sit around, drawing poodles on your hand until you had to go to work again.

With school, though, once you get out, you have to then spend quite a bit of time doing mindless, unintuitive worksheets. And, when you have a project, it can consume several days.

Free time helps keep people sane, so let them have it by cutting back on homework!

It is also a good solution when a child is falling behind. But for my sake I vote that WE SHOULD BAN IT. (even though i am in the against it column, oops).

If we do not get homework, how will we be showing effort that we do care about our education. Some of you might say that homework is just a waste of time and tests are the ones that show our knowledge but students are forced to do tests, homework you don't have to do. If you do not complete your homework often that means you are not putting enough effort in your work or maybe you need help with the questions but just not asking for help.

I am unsure of what your fairytale school is, but the rest of the world gives manditory homework that is marked. So, yes, you do have to do homework. The time we show whether we truly know our curriculum is in school, where we cannot ask our parents or older siblings for the answers.

So, really, why ban it? If you get rid of Homework, you get rid of funding. If you get rid of funding, you get rid of the entire school system, you get rid of the school system, you're basically going to be a stupid person, so, here's and example: I do homework because it helps me with life skills, which builds up on my responsibility, I would rather work at Valve Software rather than being a guy who flips burgers for the rest of my life, besides, you guys on the banning homework side, look at you're grammar and spelling, if you did all of your homework, you would know how to spell. And you would know good grammar. Lastly, if I didn't have homework, I couldn't go into the field of politics, or, go into the field of Game development. I would rather be the smart man, than a man who knows nothing.Like the saying "The smart man always knows that there is always more to learn."

I think homework shouldn't be banned because homework gives you the oppurtunity to expand your intelligence and grasp new concepts. Homework can sometimes suck, but I always remember that it is going to benefit me later in life. Homework lets you practice or review the new concepts that you learned in school.

Homework is a schools way of making children learn by theirselves
different children work better in different circumstances
some children work better in school while others work better on their own
Homework gives the oppurtunity for children to work in their best environment

I'm against it cause it gives kids responsibilities and disipline it also keeeps them out of trouble as well as giving parents alone time it helps kids practice what they learnt in class lets just hope teachers don't give us too much homework so that our brain doesn't explode

it teaches kids responsibility because normally we get homework because we havn't done it in class so we sort of brou it on ourselves

If you bane homework what will most of the students grades be based on? If they are based on tests instead of homework than the kids who are poor test takers will be stressed out because they know they will fail. Even if they study that doesn't mean that they will remember everything. Some kids know the answers to the tests but when they get the tests they freeze up and go blank. I know because i was one of those students. No matter how hard i studied i still failed the tests. Without homework i wouldn't have graduated because i usually didn't do the big projects and if i did i didn't do very well with them.

I am a student in high school. I don't mind homework as long as it is in moderation. But no homework altogether?

Homework plays an important role in a student's education. It fosters independent learning, it develops one's study habits and it reinforces learning. How can students complain about not having not enough recreation time? A student could create some time within 24 hours for their recreation or relaxing.

Homework can also be proof that a student is up to date with their curriculum. It helps memorise information and other work. If a student attends class and then goes home free of homework, what he previously learned in class that day could have been forgotten, so homework will then bring that knowledge keep it memorised.

Homework increases your chance of future success and also 'practice makes perfect.'

It is essential for your life because if you don't get education you can get poor and not live in a home and you don't get a job.Children should be encouraged to have it! BTW how do you get points?

As much as we hate homework, it is essential. It reinforces the lessons we learned in class, and gives us extra practice. The only way you can get out of homework is to convince your parents to homeschool you. It rocks!! (That is just my point of view, no one needs to debate it)

Well this is how you know that the majority of this site is made up of pre teens and kids....homework, although hard and undesireable i know i hate it too, helps you reinforce everything./....without homework everything would be half assed knowledge that we cant remember......how many times did you say you countries anthem before you remember it, erpitition is the key to memory unfortunately.,.

When you play soccer and you practice and practice you get better until game day where you kill it....practice is just another way of saying homework....casue practice makes perfect

well what about time??? homework disrupts families [weather in time], overburdens children, and limits learning. If children didn't have SO much homework they would be eager to learn. Many teacher said they 'have' to assign homework but they don't want to because they don't have much time to grade it and that it ruins their social life too. Either way after 2 national surveys, i and many other people have discovered a wide range of opinions.

I think it must be important to education because it allows more and additional knowledge to be used and acquired within a specific subject and/ or topic area. Also it could be a way for a routine to be established.

I would agree they shouldn't get some types of homework. There are some assignments they may need school resources to do properly, and/or some may demand an unrealistic time commitment. However, there will always be something justified to send home as an assignment. Even a basic show-and-tell in grade school is technically a homework assignment yet it's fun and everyone may learn and benefit from it.

I'm a student, but, No, I don't believe in banning homework. Not because I believe that more homework is good or that we have enough homework, but because I believe that the grading aspect of A-F for homework should be banned and that schools should change homework assignments to be more creative. Homework should require. I thinking i and innovating (something like painting, writing a poem, or conducting an experiment) rather than just drilling and memorizing and writing information on a piece of paper. This way students that need more than just classwork to help them understand subject matter can use homework as a different avenue to enlighten them even more on the subject. The work should be made more open-ended to have a student to be able to learn and understand a topic using their own interest and style of learning, and without the stress of forcibly memorizing something that would eventually be forgotten with time. I do believe that many teachers/schools assign too much homework, but like i said homework just needs to be "more interactive, less drilling." That way kids learn HOW to learn. Not WHAT to learn. Homework should be banned for Elementary Schools and Middle schools should get a limited amount of work.

These are some good articles about the topic at question.

This is just my opinion, but I just think that to make up for their inadequacy at teaching... a teacher may assign more homework in hopes the student can come to find more answers OR the school policy sucks. That's why students get too much homework. In other words, PUBLIC SCHOOLS BLOW!

":One isn't born knowing how to make sensible lesson plans and homework assignments," said Karen Zabrowski, a seventh-grade reading teacher at Chippewa Falls Middle School in Wisconsin.

But teacher knowledge is often trumped by school system policies, created by school boards whose members are often not educators, teachers have said." - The Washington Post

"here is what Duke University professor Harris Cooper has to say:

Elementary school students get no academic benefit from homework -- except reading and some basic skills practice -- and yet schools require more than ever.

High school students studying until dawn probably are wasting their time because there is no academic benefit after two hours a night; for middle-schoolers, 1 1/2 hours.

And what's perhaps more important, he said, is that most teachers get little or no training on how to create homework assignments that advance learning." - quote from The Washington Post

Homework doesn't improve your intelligence. It just complicates things, causes you to have to change your schedule around, and confuse you on topics about which you are already confused! It's an unnecessary appendage to a person's afternoon/evening.

I saw this debate before, do your homework!

I think the great thing about home work is that it builds on what you have learned in the day,

and the sleeping mind has a chance to digest it all, and put it all into prospective.

Well if you ban homework then seven classes won't be enough. Homework is vital in allowing students to develop independent study habits and build on work in class.

Homework shows the teachers who need help and who doesn't. I understand the never-ending homework, but it shows how you working under high-pressure. I understand as I am still in school.

then why do they just see who needs help at school and by the way what you said is true kinda i guess but these days the homework isnt a really good method to find out who needs help because the children can plagiarise and say its there words when it isnt there words so i think that homework isnt the proper way to find out who needs help and who dosent

The problem isn't that there's too much work. The problem is there's not enough.

The material taught to children in elementary, junior and high school could be taught in 10 years, not 12. All kids are capable of learning it within that time instead of spinning their wheels for two more years.

What's needed is more reading, more thinking, and more evaluation by kids. The school systems fail in two ways: They are teaching kids what to think instead of _how_ to think, and they are stifling curiosity by putting the carrots in front of the kids instead of making them want it by working.

We should be making kids want to learn instead of learning to want. More homework that requires they think, instead of tedious time wasting, would do far more good.

Edit:

The purpose of "stick and carrot" is to make the donkey go forward to try and get it. If you put the carrot in the donkey's mouth, is it going to move?

Except in real life, the kids are given the answers instead of the skills to find the answers for themselves.
