My personal belief is that anyone who isn't having their basic needs met should be supported by
someone. If not by the taxpayers, then churches and other charitable organizations should be out
there in force assisting those who are willing to accept help. Actually, if the government helped
the homeless population who are able to function and are homeless due to financial circumstances
alone, it would make sense to assist them in getting them functional so they could contribute to
society. Some of the homeless population is homeless due to financial ruin and those people are not
safe out there trying to fend for themselves. The mentally or physically ill homeless people are
also in great need of assistance. Many contribute to increased crime by self medicating with
illegal drugs and/or alcohol. One major problem is that, even if they are caught buying drugs or
arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct, they may get some actual help in the form of appropriate
medication in jail, but they are soon back on the street with no means to obtain the medication that
could make a big difference in their lives. Of course there are some who need much more than
medication management to begin to pull their lives together. Some of the homeless choose to be
homeless and may or may not have mental illness that is a contributing factor. Either way, they are
not likely to accept help. There are even some who do have a loving family and enough money to live
a comfortable and happy life, yet for whatever reason, they end up on the streets and their families
suffer in a vain attempt to get them off of the streets. Soup kitchens and shelters are a start,
but there are not enough of them for the entire homeless population and, again, there are some who
would not accept that help even if there were room for them. It is a sad situation and people who
look down on them with disdain make me wonder where their sense of compassion is. There are plenty
of circumstances in life that could come into play and put one of the people who look down on the
homeless right into the exact same situation. People don't realize how blessed they are when they
don't have their needs unmet and, especially if they also have many of the material possessions that
they want in life as well. The homeless are still human beings and no matter how much we feel they
differ from us, the fact is they are not all that different. They simply have a very unfortunate
set of circumstances and do not have the ability to get back on their feet in many cases. They do
deserve our compassion, empathy and support. |

Yes, because alot of people didn't choose to be homeless. Sure, there are alot of homeless who are
drug addicts and alcoholics, but not all of them. There should at least be more homeless shelters
where homeless people could have food, shower and a roof over their head. This could also be
accompanied by a councelling service to help them find jobs and generally to get back on their own
two feet.
For this to work, the homeless person(s) would have to Want to be helped. |

You should teach them how to fish. Then they will be fishers of men. |
