| Hollywood Needs More Average People. |
| Hollywood today only shows you the super skinny OR the overweight. I'm asking why? What do you think? Agree if you think this is a problem, and how you think it is affecting society. Disagree if you think this isn't a problem, and why. I want your opinions, please no one sentence answers, and I want to know why! |

Hey look at the body image problems
if more Hollywood starlets were the size of normal people than maybe this body image problem can be
eliminated |

I agree. It would be nice for us to see more natural or average looking celebrities, instead of
skinny ones. I think it has a negative effect on society. Teenagers, particularly girls, pick up
magazines which contain airbrushed pictures of celebrities. We hardly ever see celebrities in their
natural state.
I've never been able to understand why Hollywood presents its actors and actresses in such an
unnatural state. I've seen American soap operas and there is a huge difference in the appearance of
the actors and actresses compared to actors and actresses in soaps in the UK. With UK soaps, we
presented with more realistic looking characters, such as characters without make-up, overweight
characters and characters who would be described as average looking. Switch over to an American soap
and the characters are slim, covered in make-up and look extremely glamorous no matter what time of
day it is.
Hollywood's actors and actresses just don't appear real. They appear perfect and it just isn't
realistic at all. It certainly does not set a good example for young people who pour over magazines
wishing that they looked like a particular celebrity, when in reality, the celebrity is just an
ordinary person who's pictures have been airbrushed and all blemishes removed so that they appear as
a picture of perfection. |

Hollywood should certainly use more 'average' looking people in its films and television shows. This
simply means that those Baywatch girls (I'm really dating myself here) shouldn't all be perfectly
figured and gorgeous, while actors and actresses in television shows should look more natural, more
flawed and, as such, more human. Instead, what we see is that most protagonists have perfect
hairdos, are well proportioned and have sparkling white teeth.
The apparent requirement that actors and actresses serve as the epitome of beauty seems to be a
distinctly American fascination. In fact, one of the major differences between US and UK television
shows seems to be that the British are more inclined to create fictional characters that better
represent 'average' citizens, with all their perceived flaws and imperfections. |

You've got a point. I watched Jurassic Park tonight. All of the problems in the park that led to the
dinosaurs escaping were caused by a greedy guy who was hugely fat. Was it coincidence that the bad
guy was hugely fat? No, I don't think so. It's clearly used as a dramatic visual cue. Here is
someone who isn't quite right. Here is someone who doesn't fit in.
These are the kinds of subtle ways in which racism used to be coded into films. Now, it's considered
unacceptable to do that. Indeed, the opposite process takes place. If you see a judge or a computer
programmer in a Hollywood film, the actor will now nearly always be a female or a member of an
ethnic minority. Maybe they need a similar adjustment in attitudes with regard to bodyweight issues.
The problem is that Hollywood is pretty much based around the exploitation of these subtle
psychological cues. Appearance is responsible for conveying character and drama as much as words or
actions. So, in asking them to change their approach, we're asking them to suppress their natural
instincts. But the experience of becoming more sensitive to racial portrayal shows that it can be
done. |

That would completely destroy movies. Hollywood should keep doing exactly what it's doing right now
because it's working. |

Average people are in Hollywood, and it has achieved below average results. Talent needs to enter
Hollywood. I really don't care what they look like if they have talent. Tom Hanks is pretty
average looking, but he has talent. |

Well there are average people that go into Hollywood but...with all the changes that go on in
Hollywood sometimes a person just cant take it all...so there tons of average people going into
Hollywood everyday...but the number that come out are in the single digits |
