History Should Be An Optional Subject
Because some few of us care! Why don't we talk about the future instead? I mean, we can't change history, but we can make a better future if we really put our minds through it!!! Right?

Most school subjects should be optional.

History is too important a subject to even be on the curriculum at schools. I don't think it should even be an option. It should be forbidden.

Our understanding of the present is shaped by our understanding of the past. Most political judgements are based on interpretations of the past. Therefore it is a critically important subject. But opinions about the recent past vary so wildly that it is better not to try and teach them at all. Any attempt to do so unfairly influences the mind of growing children. They should be left to discover it on their own as adults. No matter how strenuous an effort is made, It is impossible to exclude bias completely. Even when there is an almost universal consensus on a subject, there are always dissenting views. Therefore it is better not to teach history at all.

We have seen legions and legions of brainwashed children swallowing the Kool-Aid about Pearl Harbour, what a great guy Churchill was, how evil Stalin started the Cold War.

I disagree, I enjoy history, and have spent many a wonderful hour delving into the past.

History is definetly a must. Kids need to see how this country came about and how we have faught to make it free and safe. The future is great to talk about also, but history should always be a part of the schools curriculum.

How can one appreciate their present if they don't have an understanding of their past?

I'm glad nobody is for this as of yet. Historical information is crucial for our development as a nation and a world. There needs to be a more effective way to connect with the public about all things historical. It can be stimulating, eye-opening, and very informative. Wisdom can be extracted from history. Wisdom is knowledge transformed into purity of action and is meant to unify our activities. Love it.

I think there should be less years required of it, but it is definitely worth learning.

Our ex "great leader" Tony Blair banded about removing History from the curriculum in our schools. It would have been the greatest travesty of a man whose legacy for our country has been travesty after travesty. History may well record that.
You can't know where we are unless you have knowledge of where we came from. It would be an affront on all our ancestors who ever lived if we never learned from their experiences.
The world we live in today was shaped by its history.

Tony Blair was nothing more than a pup, double glazing salesman. When he was in power is a bit like the story of a keen sportsman, (George Bush), who spent the weekend at a hunting lodge and bagged a record number of birds with the help of this pup named, (Salesman). George Bush was so impressed that when making his reservation for the following year, he specifically requested the services of the same pup. "To bad" said the lodge owner, (the British people), "a year ago, some jerk of a Texan cowboy who was here kept calling the pup 'Sales Manager'. Now all he does is sit on his tail and barks. He had to go!"

I agree with joe. Whats going to change the future more?
A. Attacking another country?
B. Looking back in history and deciding war only causes more war.

By looking back at History we can learn about our past mistakes, therefore, we can help shape the future. I'm not saying it always works like this, because History has the nasty habit of repeating itself.
