No one can dispute that getting out and walking in the rural fresh air creates both physical and
psychological rewards.
Walking is the best activity a non-exerciser can start with. It trims muscles and eventually you can
lose weight, if you do sufficient distances.
Mild exercise like hiking creates endorphins that help soothe the spirit and reduce mental stress. I
make the joke that I am an animist who worships in “The Church of the Great Outdoors” on my
Sunday hiking treks.
Joining a hiking club is a great way to socialize while getting fit. Try it, and you’ll never
pursue the “bar scene” again!
Also, hiking brings an increased awareness of the environment and can lead to the related
intellectual pursuits of wildlife-identification, birding, and an interest in geology, botany, and
the human history of the region in which your are walking. |
