Gymnasts That Participate In The Olympics Must Be Older Than 16.
Young gymnasts are not mentally and physically mature to compete in a high level.

According to my point of view, I would like to say that the gymnasts participating in Olympics must be older than 16. Olympic is the biggest event and the most ancient one. The pressure for success in an Olympic event remains enormous and the maturity level of a gymnast under 16 is not at all as much as to accept. The age level should be reconstructed in order to give some mental assistance to those soft hearted Olympic participants. The bad results in Olympic can lead to some major effects to the gymnasts of below the age of 16. The sheer pressure of Olympic Games can harm to the participants performance as well. Without having the proper age of handling this pressure, no one should be allowed to participate in an Olympic event and this should be established from the very next Olympic.

Studies show that at 10 or younger the bones of the human body are still developing Not only are the bones developing, but so is the maturity of the child. So putting a child under the age of 13 in a HIGH level competition is a bad choice for the body and maturity of the child. This doesn't limit them to competitions. It only limits them to HIGH level competitions. Children can compete, but should only be able to compete in a littler league of gymnastics.

Gymnasts should be older than 16 to participate in the Olympics because:

1) Gymnasts under 16 are immature.
2) They don't have much knowledge about the banned drugs in sport.
3) They are physically not very strong, compared to older aged competitors (over 16 years of age).
4) 16 years of age is not the ideal age to handle such enormous pressure, such as that of the Olympics.

So, if we use these four points only, then it is concluded that gymnasts under the age of16 should not be allowed to compete in the Olympics.

 1) Gymnasts under 16 are immature.

I have to assume you mean intellectually/socially immature. That's the most common thing someone means when they say, "You are being immature."

This is flat out ageist. When I was in high school many years ago. I knew some very mature people. People on the debate team, people who participated in Academic Decathlon. I've also met plenty of 20-somethings who are poor losers, cry-babies, or assholes. Totally immature people. Age is simply *not* an indication of maturity.

Besides all that, who cares how mature someone is? It doesn't even matter that someone is immature. The games measure their ability as an athlete, not their maturity. Maturity is irrelevant.

2) They don't have much knowledge about the banned drugs in sport.

So being 17 automatically imparts knowledge of banned drugs. Whew. that's good. I'm glad knowledge grows like a gland in the minds of people in their late teens. This is ridiculous. Knowledge is gained through eduction. You can educate a 13 year old as well as you can educate a 17 year old. I've seen both reject knowledge given to them, and that's just life. You can't force someone to recognize the truth of your words when you caution them against drugs. Being 17 -- or 30 -- does not magically cause a person to recognize the dangers and fraud of banned drugs.

3) They are physically not very strong, compared to older aged competitors (over 16 years of age).

This is the worst premise you stated. It's just silly. The Olympic games are a measurement of ability. Strength is one of the measured abilities. If they weren't strong enough, they wouldn't qualify.

4) 16 years of age is not the ideal age to handle such enormous pressure, such as that of the Olympics.

I've seen adults break down and cry at the Olympics from the pressure. Being 17 -- or 30 -- does not automatically shield you from the pressure. I would argue that nothing can prepare you for the pressure of such a venue other than competing in such a venue. Trial by fire, as they say. Who says you need to be at some imaginary "ideal age" to handle pressure? Again, I've met 10 year olds that handle pressure better than some 30-somethings. It's a personal thing, it's practically unmeasurable, and we shouldn't ban people from playing in the games because you fear they might experience pressure. Life is all about dealing with various pressures.

You should not ban individuals from competing based on stereotypes about their age class. If you don't want immature, ignorant, weak-muscled or weak-spirited participants then you should qualify them based on their maturity, knowledge, strength and will. NOT their age!

However, strength and skill are all that matter in a competition about strength and skill.

Well i read that in the news and it seems that from the Olympic Games after Beijing08, this is going to be a rule. I'm for it. The Olympics should be all about competition, equality and respect for the rights of every person. It's positive that the age is limited and I don't understand how they haven't think about this before.

I'm against age discrimination at the Olympics. See my reply to "Simple" on the left.

The entire so-called sport of gymnastics should be discontinued. It's impossible to take a sport seriously if it can only be optimally performed by people whose bodies, never mind minds, are not fully mature. And yes, many adolescent children are not psychologically mature enough to bear up under the pressures that come through participating in high-level international competitions.

In addition, gymnastics clearly has an aesthetic element which is inappropriate in any sport. Sport should be about tangible, measurable things such as number of points scored, time achieved, height beaten. Aesthetic judgements vary widely and casually awarding points for a performance after a cursory inspection is not the way serious sports competitions should be conducted.

People under 16 should also get a chance to show off their talent and also people under 16 also means people over 80 and 90 etc. They are all over 16. So why don't you put an 80 year old person in the 2008 Beijing Olympics? Isn't it all the same concept?

Being 5 and small has nothing to do with it. Studies show that at 10 or younger the bones of the human body are still developing Not only are the bones developing, but so is the maturity of the child. I don’t agree with it. Mental and physical maturity has nothing to do with the quality of a gymnast. A young gymnast is more active than the old one. Every gymnast has a couch who teaches him/her the requisite skills and information about the sports. The basic thing is the hard work and passion. If someone has the passion then he can perform in any arena.

I don't agree with it. You see, if someone has talent and he/she can perform well, then he/she must be given the chance to perform.

Moreover, if someone is more than 22 years old he is considered as an "old man" for performing Gymnastics.

Therefore it is not the right thing to do.
