Of course guitar is better!
From my personal experience...all guitarists can play basic bass guitar...but not all bassists can
play guitar.
In rock music...the bass has to be very easy therefore the bassist doesn't have to very talented but
guitarists do |

The guitar, like the keyboard in its various forms, is one of the few instruments capable of
creating richly complex chorded sound on its own. Most instruments can only function effectively in
concert with others. As such the guitar is clearly far more complex than the bass guitar.
Bass guitarists tend to be like goalkeepers in children's football matches. They are the ones who
are not very good at playing football so they get relegated to the goalkeeper slot instead. Of
course, there are are a few bass guitarists who are exceptional artists, like Jaco Pastorius, for
example. But these are exceptions. There are exceptional goalkeepers too. Most bass guitarists, in
musical terms, are simply plodders. Fortunately for them, they don't need to be anything more than
that. |

I cant choose. I love all guitars and the sounds they make. My fave would have to be acoustic. |

Bass is a guitar!! I play guitar in a band and we have a bass player. He helps make the band! |

Bass is generally boring compared with the more challenging rhythm lead. If you compare a tenner
with a bass it might sound boring.
But one would sound utterly bland without the other. |

Both are important when it comes to the sound that a group produces. It's just not fair to say that
one is more important than the other. Guitar maybe front and center, but the world of music would be
a lot different if there was no such thing as the bass guitar. Notice a bass is a guitar too. |

This is ridiculous. Bass can be just as hard as guitar. Have you tried mastering double-thumb slap
bass or tapping on bass? |

Without base you don't have a good beat. Your probably going to argue and say that the drum keeps
the beat. That's true, but even though the base isn't as noticed when it's there, if you pulled it
out you would notice the lack of a steady beat. |

Guitar is not at all better than bass. It is merely much more popular. As a bassist and viola player
(two deep, beautiful instruments that always get the short end of the stick), I feel I can say that
without bass, the generic band would suck; the same is true for an orchestra. Without the viola
section, the violins would suck.
The Pythagorean Philosophy of music states that music is composed of opposites, of warring elements,
of harmony and melody. Bass is the rich, harmonic sound that every guitar needs beside it (just as
viola is the rich, harmonic sound that every violin needs to accompany it). |

They're both very important parts of a band. You can say that guitar is HARDER than bass, but you
can't say that it is better than bass. |

Each instrument compliments each other. It would be a bland world if there were only one instrument. |

Bass is a guitar.
Without Bass there is no funk. |

A guitar and a bass are technically very close to each other but sound wise and musically very
different. A guitar gives the sound of a middle octave and higher octave whereas a bass is specially
meant to describe the sound of a lower octave. In a song a bass makes the platform for the other
instruments to sound properly. It shapes the entire scenario of the song and upholds the overall
dynamics. Generally for a layman a bass is not so audible because the frequency that it generates is
noticeable if the person is a musician. In that case only a musician can understand the essence of
bass. In most cases the guitar is always played in the forefront and bass is used to give a back up.
That is why bass is not heard so properly but both are equally important. |

I disagree because 1) it's apples and oranges; and 2) I love them both. Bass has it's place, as well
as electric and acoustic guitars. |

I personally think that the bass guitar greatly enhances the quality of music in a song. As far as I
have been able to interpret you are referring to when a bass or a guitar are played solo. A bass
guitar has a very significant place as a solo instrument in fusion, jazz and Latin music etc. The
sound quality is different for both these instruments and each adds its own flavor to the
performance. |

I disagree. I think that both the guitar and the bass are wonderful instruments. Each one has its
own unique characteristics and contributes it own unique sound to the band. It is true that one may
be easier to play than the other, but that does not mean that one is more important than the other.
In a band, all instruments have to work together towards the common goal of producing a song. If
they do not work together, then the song will sound terrible. The bass is only boring because you
make it boring. It is an important part of the band and contributes to the harmony of the song.
Would you really like to listen to music without bass sound? |
