Government Should Nationalise The Energy Industry
Many reasons. The private sector continually profiteers from by raising prices more than their costs, while not paying their workers properly. The private sector does not take into account the social cost of the environmental impact of fossil fuels, therefore will not switch to renewable until it is too late. Nationalisation would allow Govt to build renewable which are not being built, therefore improving environment, energy price stability and security and create jobs

Lets start with your supporting statements:

"The private sector...profiteers [sic] by raising prices more than their costs..." - Wouldn't that be the basis of capitalism?

"...while not paying their workers properly." - What is improper about the payments to workers? Are they being paid in bags of pennies? In beads and wampum?

' 'Nationalization' would allow Govt to build renewable..." - What prevents the government from building renewables? Nothing that I can see. In fact, the government is encouraging the use of renewable fuels (ie. Ethanol, wood pulp, hydroelectric) through tax and subsidy (read: Redistributionist) policies. That has worked marvelously so far, hasn't it?!?

"...therefore improving environment, energy price stability and security and create jobs. [sic]" - Lets take the Ethanol example.
1) Government encourages use of Ethanol by requiring fuel distributors to mix Ethanol into gasoline.
2) Government encourages farmers through government subsidies to grow more corn to create Ethanol.
3) Fuel prices increase because Ethanol is more expensive to produce than petroleum-based octane.
4) Farmers grow more corn to earn more subsidies.
5) More land is deforested to grow more corn.
6) Corn prices rise (artificially) and food corn grows more scarce as the corn is more valuable as a fuel additive than as a food product.
7) In May and June, there was talk of anger in Mexico and the US Hispanic community where food corn is a staple that had become scarce.

In consequence, you have in fact damaged more of the planet (deforestation) and increased energy prices (Ethanol costs more).

To counter your points, which seem to support an incentive based free market approach to energy and environmentalism i would like to point out a number of difficulties in your arguments.

For example, in the UK there have been a number of disputes over pay from oil companies, especially in scotland where there was a 2 day strike.

Raising prices in a vastly disproportionate way to costs, in a way such as the energy profiteers do is the basis of capitalism is unfortunately the basis of capitalism, they can get away with this because of the inelasticity in the price of oil.
however, privatised British gas raising prices by 35 percent when wholesale gas prices actually fell is nothing other than a scam upon the people.

The ethanol example which you use, is in fact merely an intervention into the free market, not nationalisation.

In the UK energy is loosely regulated and completely privatised, therefore the government lacks the funds which could be brought in through nationalisation and social ownership of the power plants and raw materials.
The government could then therefore invest these funds in directly building the infastructure required for renewables such as wind power and tidal and HEP power (possibly geothermal although not really suited to the UK), or even clean coal technology. Which would create jobs in construction and maintainance and graduate jobs in engineering and new technologies.

As if the energy industry wasn't screwed up enough already.

Sure. Why not. We are on the way to socialism anyway.

Why is it you think the government could manage this without messing it up? Has our government done anything that has really impressed you with their results? The oil companies are greedy for profits and the politicians are greedy for votes. We lose both ways. At least with the companies in control we get gasoline. The government would only louse it up with trying to ensure everything was 'fair' ( I.E. Get votes )

Remember, the government is not some monolithic, all powerful institution. It is just a group of people with the same ability to err as the rest of us.

sure this govt is not all that competent, but at least it could build renewable energy, which would mean that feul tax xould be reduced without detriment to the environment, thus reducing costs for most people.
